Miss you!

Dear Wizardman, I'm sorry to read you've retired and hope to see you again someday. You worked very hard on this encyclopedia and it's much better because you did. :) -SusanLesch (talk) 17:03, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear about this. Thank you for all you've done here, especially on WP:BASEBALL. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavours! —Bloom6132 (talk) 04:07, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

And MER-C cares and Dana Boomer cares and we've got a brand new copyright clerk who is going gangbusters (list not exclusive - just the first three that came to mind bright and early this morning.) I imagine we'd all rather have you here and writing articles even if you've burned out on copyright work. You've been carrying that load for a long time now, and I know how heavy it is. I hope you will decide to come back and do the things that still inspire you. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:15, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Absolutely, and I feel almost exactly the same way. That was a batshit insane weekend for copyvio cleanup, the likes of which I never wish to see again. FYI, I indeffed four of them (علی پیرحیاتی has made >60 edits per user talk edit, which makes me wonder whether (s)he should be indeffed as well). There is a significant problem with non-communicative copyvio editors and I think a rant on AN or some other highly trafficked venue is in order -- I'll leave it to you for maximum catharsis. MER-C 12:56, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Let me add my name to the list of those who care passionately about making sure that contributions to Wikipedia are free content. I'm sorry I haven't been as active as I'd like to recently at WP:CCI—real-life commitments have forced me to scale back my efforts; at the moment I have time only to keep my eye on one or two persistent copyright-infringing sockpuppeteers. However, I do appreciate all the work you've been doing on run-of-the-mill CCI cases. I hope you'll enjoy your break, and that it won't turn out to be permanent. :) —Psychonaut (talk) 15:05, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
Second that! Take a nice break and come back re-energized and refreshed! --Randykitty (talk) 15:26, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry to see that your time here is coming to an end, but you've certainly done more than enough in building the encyclopedia. You will be missed. Northern Antarctica (talk) 16:57, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Tireless CCI Contributor Barnstar
Frankly, every one of the 17,000,000+ users or however many we are up to these days could give you a barnstar, and it still would not be sufficient thanks for the tireless work you do behind the scenes at CCI. I appreciate your efforts; thanks to people like you doing that "grunt work", people like me can have fun writing articles on topics we enjoy ... I appreciate that opportunity. I know that you prefer writing baseball articles to your copyright work, and I can hardly blame you; thanks for both of those key facets of your work. Without editors such as yourself keeping us legal, this project would not exist. So when I say thank you, I would like to think I do so on behalf of the roughly 116 million people who visit Wikipedia on a monthly basis who have no idea the hard work that you and others perform at CCI on a daily basis. Thank you, thank you, thank you, and did I forget to say thank you. Go Phightins! 03:58, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

Update

So, my rather abrupt leaving seems to have made waves. While I knew some people would be disappointed, I wasn't expecting the complete restructuring of the Baseball project or the sudden extra hands handling copyright work. Seeing people jump in does give me hope that the project might be alright.

Does that mean I'm back? It depends on the meaning of "back". Will I be back to the 1000 edit a month guy who manages slews of processes? No, that part of me is done. Will I write about the occasional topic that interests me, ignoring anything outside of the mainspace? That's the most likely possibility. It has been a really long time since I legitimately just worked on things I was interested in without worrying about the outer parts of the site. Besides, the archives I do have access to may disappear and lock me out, or new ones may open up that are perfect for me.

Finding those stories may be enough to keep me going. They are out there, for the subjects you are passionate about as well as I. They just have to be brought to the masses. Wizardman 00:18, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Based on my understanding of your abrupt departure, it seems you burnt out on CCI work. While I appreciate the value of what you were doing, you probably did it too much, and too hard. Content creation is where it's at, my man. Maybe you could find a happy medium between content creation and admin duties, somehow. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:16, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

I'm very happy to hear that you are not gone. I just read MRG's post, and it hit home. While my copyvio work isn't in the same league as yours (but whose is?), I get into a mode where I want to take a meaningful dent out of the backlog, but then overdo it and have to quit for a time. This isn't just copyvio work, the same happens in OTRS. I need to do a better job of following her suggestion. Work on something you find rewarding. Welcome back.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:01, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

FA congratulations

Sorry I missed this earlier. Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Billy Joe Tolliver to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,326 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be). If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. BencherliteTalk 10:38, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Singapore legal GANs

Reviewing sixteen long, technical articles is a mammoth task for anybody. I suggest that the set of Singapore legal GANs be overseen by two reviewers. Having two reviewers speeds up the process and there are many situations where a second reviewer would be useful. For example, if the professor and one reviewer disagree on an issue, the other reviewer can offer a third opinion. ChrisGualtieri agrees with this idea and since you deleted the review pages, would you be willing and able to be the second reviewer? --Hildanknight (talk) 06:24, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Just FYI

I have once again launched a copyright appeal at AN, no LOLcats this time: Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Copyright_help_needed. I am nothing if not an optimist. :) If even one person helps out because of it, it'll be worth something. But I'm clinging to the dream that a dozen will and we will find backlogs melting away.

I hope that you don't mind that I mentioned you - in retrospect, I should have asked first. :/ I have long found you inspiring my drive to continue, and I'm hoping that others will rally to that as well.

I was thinking even if you feel the review was in-adequate, it would be ideal to keep the discussion archived somewhere. I was also wondering if there was something we could do about the original, first review, which was abandoned. The page is up for its 3rd review, even though it's never been failed. I can just see editors rolling their eyes under the assumption of a COI spamming noms, when it's not actually my fault ;-)

BTW - did you talk to the reviewer about it? I don't remember the username. CorporateM (Talk) 01:06, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! This is a note to let the main editors of Art Houtteman know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on April 26, 2014. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 26, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Art Houtteman

Art Houtteman (1927–2003) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball. In 325 career games, Houtteman pitched 1,555 innings and posted a win-loss record of 87–91, with 78 complete games, 14 shutouts, and a 4.14 earned run average. He was signed by scout Wish Egan in 1945 at 17 years of age, and joined a Detroit Tigers pitching staff that had lost players to injuries and World War II. After moving between the major and minor leagues over the next few years, he was nearly killed in a driving accident just before the 1949 season. Houtteman rebounded from his injuries and went on to win 15 games that season and made his only All-Star appearance in the following year. He played three more seasons with the Tigers, then pitched for the pennant-winning Cleveland Indians during their 1954 season. After losing his position as starting pitcher, he played two more seasons with the Indians before he was bought by the Baltimore Orioles, with whom he finished his final season in Major League Baseball. Houtteman ended his baseball career in the minor leagues and became a sales executive in Detroit. (Full article...)

I've done some intensive research on Kellerman and I would hate to see it go to waste. Thank you.

Main Page appearance: Art Houtteman

This is a note to let the main editors of Art Houtteman know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on May 4, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 4, 2014.

In 325 career games, Houtteman pitched 1,555 innings and posted a win–loss record of 87–91, with 78 complete games, 14 shutouts, and a 4.14 earned run average.

April edition of The Inside Corner

Hi, Wizardman: given your reduced editing status, I appreciate any time you might spend on the newsletter, though I'm sure WikiProject Baseball members would be happy if you were to just devote your full efforts on content-related matters ;-). The next issue is targeted for release on April 27, so if there is something you'd like to submit by this Friday, that would be great! isaacl (talk) 02:17, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Singapore linguistics articles

Dear Wizardman, thanks for reviewing Speak Mandarin Campaign and delisting Speak Good English Movement. May I suggest that you review Language education in Singapore first and provide suggestions on how Speak Good English Movement may be improved? To clarify, the five linguistics articles were written by a group of Nanyang Technological University students a few years ago and I have selected them for a Singapore GA drive. I nominated the articles with the intention of rewriting and polishing them while waiting for reviewers. --Hildanknight (talk) 03:12, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Scott Carroll

Can you "un-delete" Scott Carroll's article since hes making his MLB debut tomorrow?--Yankees10 19:57, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

Done. Can't say I see "29 year old minor leaguer major his MLB debut out of nowhere" every day. Wizardman 20:04, 26 April 2014 (UTC)
Yup, its quite rare. Thanks--Yankees10 20:14, 26 April 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's United States ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Rhodesia Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Washington, D.C. Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Canada Reid, iain james (submissions), tiger from Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Minas Gerais Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Nepal Czar (submissions) and Indiana Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. Good luck! GA review for Ian McKellen

Thank you for passing the review for Ian McKellen; despite the help of Quadell and others, I guess I just got disillusioned after Khazar's retirement and needed a Wikibreak. I've not really had much involvement on anything you've worked on, but from the response to your retirement, I can see how integral and valued you are to the project. I hope your semi-return is more fulfilling to you. — Sasuke Sarutobi (talk) 16:59, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

I have re-closed this discussion with further rationale. Next time you want more detail, feel free to ask on my talk page and I'll be happy to provide it, there is no need for an out-of-process reversion. Lankiveil (speak to me) 09:30, 1 June 2014 (UTC).

Your GA nomination of Stefan Wever

The article Stefan Wever you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Stefan Wever for things which need to be addressed. Request

Can you move Jacob Realmuto to J. T. Realmuto? I somehow confused CBS with MLB.com when I did a google search to double-check his name.--Yankees10 18:59, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

@Yankees10: Is this per WP:COMMONNAME, I assume? Go Phightins! 19:03, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Yeah. He is listed at MLB.com and pretty much everywhere else as J. T.--Yankees10 19:04, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Done. Go Phightins! 19:08, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
Great. Thanks Phightins.--Yankees10 19:10, 1 June 2014 (UTC)

Assessment review advice

Greetings Wizardman,

I am writing to seeking peer review volunteers who would be willing to assist with an A-class review for an article relating to WikiProject Eurovision. According to the A-class assessment advice, if a project does not have their own formal WikiProject reviewing team, that the other option is to follow the basic assessment method. Upon researching this further, I have discovered that such process involves seeking independent reviewers (including peer review volunteers) that have an expert knowledge in the field relating to the article topic, and requesting if they would mind undergoing the A-class review process on a Project's behalf.

You kindly did a GA review for Project Eurovision a couple of years ago on the article ABU TV Song Festival 2012, and with that in mind I was wondering if you would mind assisting with such A-class review on the article Eurovision Song Contest 2012, at a time that is convenient for yourself?

Thank you in advance, and I look forward to reading your response.

Regards, Wes Mᴥuse 17:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
