There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. Recent changes
The API sandbox and help pages now show more clearly when API modules are marked as internal. API modules marked as internal were probably internal before. It was easier to miss. You should look for non-internal alternatives. [1]
Problems
- There is a translation tool we use on wikis with more than one language. For a few days it did not create pages for new languages when someone translated a page. The languages did not show in the language bar. This has been fixed. [2]
- The history and diffs can show wrong content. This is because of a cache problem. It will soon be fixed. [3]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 October. It will be on all wikis from 24 October (calendar).- Reference Previews will be a beta feature on all Wikipedias and some Wikivoyages. It shows you a preview of the footnote when you hover over or click on the number. It has been a beta feature on German and Arabic Wikipedia since April.

Hi, do you remember creating Category:Universities in Stockholm in 2016? It looks like a near duplicate of Category:Higher education in Stockholm, but only contains three former women's colleges, so I think it could be merged with Category:Defunct universities and colleges in Sweden. - The mobile beta mode will be disabled to have less maintenance. The developers will focus on the desktop improvements project. You can turn on advanced mobile contributions mode if you want to see the categories. You could also jump back to the top. This can instead be done with a gadget or user script. [12]
- Parsoid is software we use for the visual editor, content translation, Flow and the Android app. This has been rewritten. It will come to the wikis gradually over the next two weeks. It has been tested, but there could be some diffs or previews that don't look right. If you see any you can report them. [13]

The Anomebot2 and blank lines preceding stub templates
Don't know if this has been brought up before. It's long-standing custom to have two blank lines before stub templates, as described at (WP:STUBSPACING). But The Anomebot2 removes these when it places the {{coord missing}} template. Should this be the case? --Paul_012 (talk) 13:26, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
- It shouldn't be: the bot tries to place the tag before the category and DEFAULTSORT lines, if present, which should precede the stub templates, which should by convention be the final lines in the source text. - The Linter extension helps you find technical errors in articles. It did not show new changes last week. This was because of an API problem. It is now working again. [19]
- Special:Watchlist can show the wrong information again. It does not always show which edits are read and which are unread. This is because of a database problem. The developers are working on solving the problem. [20]

Fixing wikibot blank line behavior
@Paul 012: Thanks for your bug report. After the Christmas break, I've tidied up my old and rather sprawling bot codebase, which includes almost a decade of spaghetti code, and isolated the lines of code which cause the unwanted behavior into a single subroutine. Recent changes
- You can no longer read Wikimedia wikis if your browser use very old TLS. This is because it is a security problem for everyone. It can lead to downgrade attacks. Since 9 December you just see a warning. Soon the browser will not connect to the wikis at all. Most are users on Android systems older than 4.4. You can read the browser recommendations. [25]
- Special:LinkSearch has been moved from the "Redirecting special pages" section on Special:SpecialPages to the "Lists of pages" section. [26]
Changes later this week
- Wikis can protect pages so that only some users can edit them. The standard protection levels are Require autoconfirmed or confirmed access and Require administrator access. If your wiki use more protection levels the technical name might be renamed for standardisation. This doesn't affect what users see. [27]

For good reason, WP:REDLINK is an official editing guideline ("a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow"), and WP:WTAF merely an essay (see its header, which states "This page is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community"). Please don't remove policy-compliant redlinks like these; they are a long-established Wikipedia tradition that is core to the Wiki mechanism that helps grow the encyclopedia. -- The Anome (talk) 19:36, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

For good reason, WP:REDLINK is an official editing guideline ("a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow"), and WP:WTAF merely an essay (see its header, which states "This page is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community"). Ineffective partial blocks
Hello The Anome. I have noticed that two users who you blocked today are in fact not blocked at all: Special:Contributions/Sagehippyfuckup and Special:Contributions/Rinkutechservices. They are partial-blocked with no namespaces or pages listed to be blocked. This is because you either unchecked "editing" on the block form, or selected "partial" but didn't choose any pages to block them from. Can you have a look at them please? - Readers who were not logged in briefly saw the interface in a language decided by their browser. It should normally be in the language of the wiki. This happened for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug. [41]

- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You will now be able to choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This will be a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. [42]
- When you asked for a new password you could see if the username didn't exist on Special:PasswordReset. Now the page will show the username you entered and tell you an email has been sent if the username exists. This is for better security. [43]
- On Special:WhatLinksHere you can see what other pages link to a page. You can see if the link is from a redirect. You can now see which section the redirect links to. [44]

Idea for Bot
After walking through a Marina a looking at the boats I have had an idea, they most have transponders on them that transmit they location and basic unique identifiers. I thought if there was a bot that dripped that data into wikidata, we could fill in missing identifiers and allow someone use the "around me" function to find out more about the boats going by.
The idea is just in the research phase but wanted to run it past you as the owner of a bot that does Geo stuff.
I have found a couple of DB's that act as repository of this data
seems to be a source of data for this but requires purchase and running of a transceiver so as to contribute to the database (not just use the data)
It maybe easier to do an air one first
getting the data from https://opensky-network.org/apidoc/python.html#retrieving-data and using http://www.airframes.org/ to convert the ICAO 24 id to something wikidata supports

Since I am from south Asian studies I do have my own limitations, and article has rightly came under criticism being not global enough and not critical enough.

The Editing team has been working on the talk pages project. The goal of the talk pages project is to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. This project is the result of the Talk pages consultation 2019.
The team is building a new tool for replying to comments now. This early version can sign and indent comments automatically. Please test the new Reply tool.
- On 31 March 2020, the new reply tool was offered as a Beta Feature editors at four Wikipedias: Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian. If your community also wants early access to the new tool, contact User:Whatamidoing (WMF).
- The team is planning some upcoming changes. Please review the proposed design and share your thoughts on the talk page. The team will test features such as:
- an easy way to mention another editor ("pinging"),
- a rich-text visual editing option, and
- other features identified through user testing or recommended by editors.

- @Anarchyte: I think this particular page wasn't a vandalism target, but got protected as part of a series of page protections applying to a range of similar pages that were the target of vandalism. Hi, I've got some more redirects that I'd like you to vet before I take any action. On this page, if you sort by protector, there are some more that relate to other areas of BDSM. I've opened some histories at random and none had any vandalism since you protected them. As it stands, this series of redirects is comprehensively protected, so if you decide to unprotect these I'll follow up with any related ones and try to make sure they're similarly unprotected (if I find any). Recent changes
- If you forget your password you can ask for a new one to be sent to your email address. You need to know your email address or your username. You can choose that you need to enter both your email address and your username. This is a preference. This is to get fewer password reset emails someone else asked for. This is now available on all Wikimedia wikis. [78][79]
Problems
- There is a bug that creates problems for iPhone users with iOS 13 and Safari. If you use an iPhone to read or edit Wikipedia and see bugs on the mobile site you can report them. [80]
- Several wikis including Wikidata will be on read-only for a few minutes on 19 May. This will happen around 05:00 UTC. English Wikipedia will be on read-only for a few minutes on 21 May 05:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance. [81][82]

Recent changes
- There is a new beta version of the Wikimedia Commons app for Android. It has a new zoom function when you look at images. It can also suggest places when you upload geotagged photos. [87]
Problems
- There was a problem with the Commons database on 27 May. Commons could not be edited for eight minutes. Because of this problem the database was moved. This caused another short read-only time on 29 May. [88][89][90]
- The Vector skin had a problem where you couldn't add links to the article in other languages. You couldn't see the section if there were no links to other languages already. It also removed content translation links and links to language settings. This has now been fixed. [91]
Changes later this week
- You can get a notification when someone links to a page you created. You can turn these notifications off for individual pages. You can soon turn them off also in the notifications you get. [92]

This is a person who joined Wikipedia to improve articles related to women's health, anatomy, reproductive health, family planning, etc. They are not selling a service or trolling. - Thanks. I mean, I can see where it might make sense to disallow reproductive system references or certain parts of human anatomy in usernames, but I wanted to be clear that's the case so I could provide advice to the person accordingly. I'm not all that up on the finer points of the username policy in that regard. It just seems like context should matter, and someone using an anatomical term directly related to their scientific interest in contributing to Wikipedia seems like it's at least on the ok side of the gray area. - Some articles have tables that can be sorted in different ways. For example a list of countries can be sorted alphabetically but you can click on the size column to sort them by size. If you clicked on the column a second time it would sort the countries from the bottom to the top instead. A third click will now take you back to the original sorting. [93]
- Self-closed tags now work as in the HTML5 specifications. This means you should stop using some of them.

Pages with tags that should not be self-closed have been listed in a tracking category since 2016. They will be listed in Special:LintErrors/self-closed-tag. WikidataPageBanner. It is for example used by the Wikivoyages, Wikimedia Russia and the Catalan, Basque, Galician and Turkish Wikipedias. It will now been seen by mobile visitors too. Before this it was only seen on desktop. The wikis should update instructions onMediaWiki:Sitenoticeso that editors know to test and style for mobile too. [95][96]

This edition of the Editing newsletter includes information the Wikipedia:Talk pages project, an effort to help contributors communicate on wiki more easily. The central project page is on MediaWiki.org.
- Reply tool: This is available as a Beta Feature at the four partner wikis (Arabic, Dutch, French, and Hungarian Wikipedias). The Beta Feature will get new features soon. The new features include writing comments in a new visual editing mode and pinging other users by typing
@. You can test the new features on the Beta Cluster. Some other wikis will have a chance to try the Beta Feature in the coming months. - New requirements for user signatures: Soon, users will not be able to save invalid custom signatures in Special:Preferences. This will reduce signature spoofing, prevent page corruption, and make new talk page tools more reliable. Most editors will not be affected.
- New discussion tool: The Editing team is beginning work on a simpler process for starting new discussions. You can see the initial design on the project page.
- Research on the use of talk pages: The Editing team worked with the Wikimedia research team to study how talk pages help editors improve articles. We learned that new editors who use talk pages make more edits to the main namespace than new editors who don't use talk pages.

Recent changes
- Toolforge hosts several tools created by the Wikimedia community like edit counters or enhanced editors. It is changing the domain from tools.wmflabs.org to toolforge.org. The routing scheme is moving from tools.wmflabs.org/toolname to toolname.toolforge.org. You can read the details. Tools that use OAuth will have to be updated to keep working. You can ask for help.
Problems
- There is a Wikidata item link in the sidebar on many pages. This disappeared for a couple of days for users who have the Monobook skin. This was because of a bug. It has now been fixed. [99]
- Editing, logging in and logging out didn't work properly for a short period of time last week. It was soon fixed. [100]

- There are some new tools to make it easier for newcomers to start editing. They are available on some wikis. These wikis had a problem with the visual editor for a short period of time last week. This was because of a bug in the new tools. It was soon fixed. [103]
