Redirect Vandalism

Hi, TheDJ,

I was wondering if you, or any other admin, could delete the redirect page Clown college; it leads to Harvard University. Bedankt! --MosheA (talk) 17:34, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Heh. I've just restored the previous redirect to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College, seems reasonable, and apparently the only "clown college" we have.

ANI notice

Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Thank you for addressing my concerns on AN/I. Based on your comments to the thread, I withdraw my suggestion regarding your desysop and consider the matter resolved. I wish you the best and that things will work out both here and on Commons. The cartoon in question notwithstanding, I share your concerns. I was just unaware of the situation regarding FNC. Rklawton (talk) 01:49, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

That's not the only picture you deleted. You also deleted File:Sex intercourse.jpg against consensus.

My question to you is what is the difference between Commons and English Wikipedia. Why are some pictures on Commons and some on English Wikipedia? Are the standards slightly different? Perhaps, there are more Islamic users in Commons so their views are honored? Or some other reason?

People are encouraged to put things in Commons but if it gets deleted, the English Wikipedia link gets broken. Please restore the photo in English Wikipedia for us to decide.

Besides, if you are applying a new standard, you should round up all the alleged porn and decide to delete them all. There is plenty of worse images in Wikipedia. Assorg (talk) 05:06, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Fair use rationale for File:CCKLogo.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:CCKLogo.gif. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ukexpat (talk) 19:17, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm...

On the image discussion page, you noted:

I do not see the required permissions to release this file as public domain.

Perhaps I'm being pedantic, but images do not have to be in the public domain to be used on the Wiki. Given that the page states that the image is free-to-use (not the same thing at all), I'm not entirely convinced that this is just a confusion of words.

Another Domino's question

Hi there, TheDJ. Back in January you provided some help to me on the Domino's Pizza article; as you may recall, I have a potential COI so I'm pretty careful about what I do there. However, recently another editor left a warning tag on a section in the article and a comment on the Talk page, stating that this section appeared too promotional. Some of that section is my work, and some of it is much newer. I do think it is unwieldy, but I think that editor's assessment that it uses "weasel words" is incorrect. To me, it's not the tone that makes it problematic, it's the poor organization. That's why I have proposed a series of edits to reorganize the article -- they are on the Talk page here. Unfortunately, the editor who posted the warning has not been active recently and seems to go long periods without activity. So I'm going to ask for help on the Help desk next, but first I thought I would see if you were around and cared to weigh in. Thanks, NMS Bill (talk) 19:48, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

I appreciate your input and your vote of confidence, too. Feel free to keep an eye on the article and what I do with it. Cheers, NMS Bill (talk) 20:28, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

I like the beautiful info template you added to the New York Times image. Can you come to my page and help sort out the deletion process thats is ongoing. Maybe you can help find out exactly what the person nominating the images for deletion is looking for since you have more experience with images. They find the source statement inadequate for some public domain images form newspapers and from the US census. Newer formats for information will always come along, I want to make sure the information is migrated to new formats and not deleted because it doesn't use the newest templates for formatting the metadata. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 06:42, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Sexual content

DJ, I happy that you have stuck around and continue to make positive contributions in the area of sexual content. I've spent a lot of time and energy researching the laws in this area and your the only other person I've noticed that seems to have a similar understanding. I've spent most of my time trying to understand American law, and I have some understanding of British law, but I find it hard to fully understand all of the laws for other European countries partly because of the language barrier. From the Council of Europe has established that the age of consent can be no lower than 16 and most states are 18 years old. Is there any comprehensive summary of worldwide CP law that you've found? It seems that Wikipedia is out of date in this area. - Stillwaterising (talk)

No sorry, i'm not familiar with such works. I fear most works in this area are rather country specific. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:03, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
At least in germany we have three different states. Children, Youth and Adults. The type "Jugendpornographie" §184c StGB (Youth pornography) is relatively new and yet in difficult state, since there is no known reference how this law would be ruled by a court. It runs in many problems with the constitution, involving open questions regarding to cases like seemingly minority. --Niabot (talk) 19:53, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
There was a discussion on German CP law at the Stan Spanker DR. Click on the arrow in the green box [here]. From what I understand, Jugendpornographie is no longer legal, all pornography must contain 18 and over. - Stillwaterising (talk) 03:29, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
If you go exactly after the words of the law (like some politics do, to make themself look big), then it would be illegal and im fine with it. On the other side we have the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, which denied an amparo, but stated that it would only apply,
"wenn und soweit in pornographischen Filmen auftretende Personen ganz offensichtlich noch nicht volljährig sind, etwa dann, wenn sie (fast) noch kindlich wirken und die Filme somit schon in die Nähe von Darstellungen geraten, die als (Schein-) Kinderpornographie unter den Straftatbestand des § 184b StGB fallen".
Rough Translation: "if persons occur in pornographic movies that aren't yet adult, in case of, that they look (nearly) like children/childish and as such that the movies are close to (seemingly) child pornography that falls under §184b StGB.
In other words: We have this law, but the highest court made clear that it would only apply if real minors or seemingly minors (but trying to look like children) are engaged in sexual acts. --Niabot (talk) 05:48, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Fast switch between monobook and vector skin

Hi TheDJ. I just wanted to ask if you have done anything in this relation. If yes, I wouldn't want to miss it. :-) It just came into my mind that wikEd has an on and off button, but I could not find out if a similar way could be used to switch between skins or turn on and off skin extensions. --Leyo 15:44, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

No, i haven't had time to look into that unfortunately. The idea is simple though, you have a list of variables, that you can turn on and off using cookies. The variables are matched against names of userscripts that are conditionally importScript'ed. It would be even better if it would work for gadgets as well, but editing your preferences trough the api is not yet possible (development version of mediawiki only). But I don't have the time to write that tool at this moment unfortunately. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:15, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

ISS flags

Re: The ISS flags

Can you provide a reference supporting your assertion regarding the ISS flag order? The Cover page of the Space Station Intergovernmental Agreement contradicts your assertion. Thanks C1010 (talk) 13:59, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

It's the flagbanner used by NASA. It is mostly used on official crew photographs See latest here. It's interesting to note btw that they removed the UK flag, that's something from the last two years I think, had not picked up on that before. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:08, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
As I'm sure you know, NASA isn't an international agency, it has no authority to speak for the whole of ISS program. Again, I draw your attention to the fact that the Cover page of the Space Station Intergovernmental Agreement shows a different flag order. Perhaps alphabetical order order would be the most appropriate in this case.
Unless you have additional arguments supporting your case, I will remove the flags picture due to the reasons specified above. C1010 (talk) 15:14, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Reverted - if you've got a problem with the flag order, fix it yourself; upload a new version of the file with the flags in alphabetical order if you want, but don't just remove it because you don't like the order. Colds7ream (talk) 09:25, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not a graphic artist, I'm fixing it the best I can, which in this case means removing biased/false information (see WP:NPV) that may mislead readers regarding the contribution of certain countries to the ISS. C1010 (talk) 19:22, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

decluttering edit window inc: collapsible transclusion list revisited

Hi DJ, was looking at the edit interface thinking for new users and thought 'that transclusion list really should go' I see it was a not too distant idea that you were working on (MediaWiki_talk:Common.js/Archive_18#Adding_a_script_to_collapse_template_transclusion_list) but the conversation got archived. I think it would be of immense benefit to declutter the edit window to help reduce the perceived WP wall size and it should have had more response - can't imagine anyone say it was a bad idea ( well actually this is WP so maybe!). failing that my very initial idea was to add a break line and 'technical info' or something to provide visual segregation ( could be added to the bottom of the 'please note' message on the edit window). As a side note I was also looking at the messages at the bottom - which are ( as far as I can see )

The changes in text size / tone and duplication could be ironed out to make them more like a unified piece of info and also declutter the interface a tad more.. So the collapsible templates looks good but was overlooked, is it still a possibility? Lee∴V (talkcontribs) 15:18, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes it still works and can easily be added to edit and or file pages. User:TheDJ/usagecollapse.jsTheDJ (talkcontribs) 16:09, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Just giving it a try now, looks good! First thoughts - does it just hide templates/transclusions - I notice 'hidden categories' appears after it even when hidden ... Now for other users - should probably be collapsed to start with and I was thinking 'show technical deatils' rather than show. For me it clears the interface up nicely and makes the scroll bar on the edit window more usable :) I feel it ought to be pushed/coerced into default script/gadget for new users especially, is this hard work / possible ? Lee∴V (talkcontribs) 16:34, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm playing a bit with it atm, hope you don't mind. It hides template tranclusions list and the file usage lists on file pages. If we were to actually widely deploy this, I'd prefer to rewrite some parts of our Common.js to avoid having code duplication. But we could try it simply from my script to see how people like it I guess. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 16:53, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

KSMJ.gif2

Hey, you deleted File:KSMJ logo2.gif? If you would have gone to the KSMJ page, you could have clearly seen it was in use. You need to take off the deletion for File:KSMJ logo.jpg and File:KSMJ logo2.gif, and you will clearly see, that they are totally different than KSMJ Logo.png. So, this needs to be done immediately, taking of the deletion, so that File:KSMJ logo2.gif can be recreated. Please make sure this is taken care of, and let me recreate the page. File:KSMJ logo2.gif was the previous logo, so it needs to be recreated. Please see what you can do. Thanks. (JoeCool950 (talk) 05:01, 2 August 2010 (UTC))

Never mind about fixing the deletion. I found an old 97.7 The Breeze logo that would work. It was when the first changed the name to 97.7 The Breeze, when they were still Smooth Jazz. That will work also, because the logo for 97.7 The Breeze (Light Rock, Less Talk) is similar, so everything is cool. Don't matter that it says Smooth Jazz to me on there, just what the slogan was, before they changed it to Mix 97.7, so with that being said, matter solved, right? When they were 97.7 The Breeze, as a smooth jazz station, they flipped formats, that's all. So, just let me know if matter is solved, because don't need a duplicate of the same Breeze logo for the light rock less talk logo, if they're similar. (JoeCool950 (talk) 05:27, 2 August 2010 (UTC))
Well at the time i deleted, it didn't look like it was in use. Might have been due to redirect mess or something. I'd also like to point out that 'old' logos usually do not qualify for inclusion, due to the non-free content criteria. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 13:12, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Request

I want to include an interwiki link of the Korean page that is equivalent to Template:Infobox music genre. It is ko:틀:음악 장르 정보. Also the French equivalent of this, fr:Modèle:Style musical is defunct for some reason. Much appreciated. Komitsuki (talk) 15:23, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

You can easily do it yourself, the interwiki's are int this unprotected documentation page of the template

Wikipedia CSS Unicode font selection

Hi, TheDJ, I was wondering if you could take a look at an alternative font stack proposal that I made. This is in regard to the issue of font rendering of Sanskrit terms on Windows systems. These terms use a "Unicode" css class located in a subpage of Common.css, and the fonts are selected from there. I have started a new section discussing the proposal that is on the Common.css talk page. I am not an admin, though, so I cannot make any changes to the actual CSS source. Thanks. Just had to undo your image check on asbox due to stubs with images borders, for example {{Finland-stub}}. Also, might be better putting check on {{Asbox/templatepage}}. -- WOSlinker (talk) 09:21, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

Re-upload license selector

Howdy. You may remember me from such Village Pump (technical) posts as Licensing drop down box when uploading a new version. It appears that the drop down box is still there. How would I find out when the related bug will actually be implemented here? By the way, the Troy McClure reference was intentional. :) Rockfang (talk) 02:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Howdy again. Just checking to see if you are still around and have a moment to possibly answer my question above. :) Rockfang (talk) 21:44, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea. Such things are entirely up to Tim Starling who decides what and when things are deployed. He might decide that this is not important enough to fix before an eventual MediaWiki 1.17 release. The fix is however on the list of things that should be considered for earlier deployment. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:51, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

You know what

hi TheDJ, I actually did attempt to reach other users. I personally requested History2007 to get involved for instance, but that user said to know too little about the subject and I did leave a message at the philosophy project, but I do not think anybody noticed. Perhaps Phforrest did, or that user found the discussion in a different manner. Apart from that I also contacted TFOWR and Shell Kinney by means of email. However, they both appeared very busy. So, I did my best I would say. --Faust (talk) 14:36, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

NOTE: I think that if you look at my edits you will find that at every edit I focused on the way forward and not on the conflict, but at the same time addressed the arguments made, which can be seen as focusing on the conflict I guess. However, I do not think I did so, but have simply exhausted all options. I am saying this expecially because Theobald clearly said in an email that he was not interested in finding a way out of this. --Faust (talk) 14:40, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I did not note that you had posted a request on the philosophy project on september 3rd. That is the appropriate route. Continue with that. Wait, be patient. It is your ONLY option. Complaining about Zaspino and Theobald will get you nowhere. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:55, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I think they both should be blocked for a whole list of reasons. With Pfhorrest, for instance, I am convinced I can work something out. At the very least he is open minded about most things. --Faust (talk) 15:11, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I mean this in the way that Pfhorrest is the exception in the discussion partners there, and so, as a compliment. --Faust (talk) 15:38, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Luckily we have some rules about how and why people get blocked and they are not "people that annoy Faust". —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 15:41, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

It seems to me that people who only contribute to block a specific users contributions regardless of the validity of that users contributions should be blocked for many reasons, not in the least the active countering of creating an encyclopedia. --Faust (talk) 20:18, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

@Faust, I never said that I was not "interested in a way out of this". I have said that I was very pessimistic about finding a solution and did not expect we could find a modus vivendi. I also told you in the e-mail why. The reasons for my pessimism were that you are "offending and hubristic, your philosophical sophistication is not sufficient, your self-knowledge is completely lacking and your command of language is poor." Finally, I am neither an admirer of liars nor of people who are retelling all over the place what others wrote to them in e-mails. You fall in both categories. I would never have repeated my e-mail statement here if you had been able to behave in a decent manner. I think it is almost universally acknowledged that a man should not lie in public places about private affairs. Theobald Tiger (talk) 07:48, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

I am sorry TheDJ, I should have known the troll would show up here. To correct the lies he voiced:

I can back up my claims with facts. Theobald has never done so, nor can he. Yet still he believes in his 'goal' as 'the good'. This is what Hubris is, regardless of his misunderstanding of my language. --Faust (talk) 08:12, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
I was under the impression that things unrelated to en.wiki should not be discussed here, so I deleted it, saying so. Theobald obviously feels that he is allowed to bring his nl.wiki issues with me here (on your talk page even). I am sorry for this. --Faust (talk) 08:36, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Ask for advice

Dear TheDJ, Two months ago you made an end to what at the time was called The Dutch Turmoil. I agreed with your solutions (without having said so) but I see clearly that it nevertheless happens again. What would be the best thing to do under the circumstances? Shall I from now on leave the judgment of Faust's edits and proposals to the en.wiki community minus myself? I am prepared to leave the battlefield as I do not see how further escalation of the conflict could be avoided. Theobald Tiger (talk) 08:52, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
P.S. Of course, I could have simply quit the scene without bothering you. I am not important, and though I am not completely unfamiliar with ethical and philosophical issues, I am not a specialist either. The reason that I doubt whether my exit is desirable or not is that an extremely mild-mannered, erudite and knowledgeable editor as Pfhorrest who writes clear, unambiguous and with precision about ethics and philosophy is left alone in fighting the dragon (if not supported by the community). See for example [2]. Theobald Tiger (talk) 12:28, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

It is not happening again. We have a dispute between several editors that is primarily content based. Content disputes have many ways in which they can be solved. Most of them very laborious. So far I have not seen you being involved in an editor dispute and that is a good thing. The best way to find a compromise on the content is by asking other non-involved editors to evaluate the proposed changes. This can be a tad difficult because so few editors are knowledgeable in this area. It is therefore very important for many sources to be presented to the broader public, so that editors can evaluate these sources. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 23:23, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
Hi TheDJ, please do not buy into this. Not even for a second was Theobald interested in the content of this article. He has no idea of what it is about, nor does he care. The only reason he came here was to continue the conflict he started on nl.wiki.
@ Theobald: Please stop insulting me by calling me hubristic, arrogant, incompetent and lord knows what else. --Faust (talk) 06:52, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
@TheDJ, Thanks. I'll get on with it. Theobald Tiger (talk) 07:01, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
@Faust, I quoted from our e-mail exchange because you were lying about it. That I am not interested in the content of en.wiki is simply not true. Theobald Tiger (talk) 07:01, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

I was under the impression that things unrelated to en.wiki should not be discussed here, so I deleted it, saying so. Theobald obviously feels that he is allowed to bring his nl.wiki issues with me here (on your talk page even). I am sorry for this. --Faust (talk) 08:54, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:50, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi TheDJ. I undid your change to that page, as I did not feel that there was an adequate enough consensus to make such a far-reaching edit. Would you care to join the discussion on the talk page? NW (Talk) 20:48, 23 September 2010 (UTC)

Please do not add watchlist notices without reading them and thinking about whether they make sense, as you did here. I realise that this request came from someone in the Foundation, but that doesn't make the notice any less misleading. Thank you. Hans Adler 08:28, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Purge tab

Hi!

I would like to suggest an update for MediaWiki:Gadget-purgetab.js, as explained at meta:User_talk:Pathoschild#MediaWiki:Gadget-purgetab.js. I don't know if it is needed to use encodeURIComponent() as in MediaWiki:Gadget-UTCLiveClock.js (when would we have a problem if it were not used?). Helder (talk) 15:39, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Good suggestion, Done. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:09, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Signpost help

Hey TheDJ, I'm contacting you and Theo10011 (as designated backups who have contributed recently) in response to my forthcoming unavailability for the Signpost Tech report. I hope to be able to write much of this week's report, but I'm not around on Monday, so the report may well need updating for breaking news and/ or polishing. Next week's issue will be similar, but I won't be around on the Sunday either. The issue in a fortnight I may miss completely, or I may only be able to contribute very late in the day. Your help with any of these issues would be very much appreciated. I do have a few useful links: the userbox on my userpage turns into a useful preload link when the next issue hasn't been started yet (it does all the dates and whatnot for you); [3] is a list of the bugs *closed* as fixed in the last 7 days (you need to be careful); [4] is of course the blogosphere; [5] is the server admin log; [6] foundation-l; [7] wikitech-l; [8] is our sister project's take on things. I hope that helps, and once again, thanks for any help you can provide. - Jarry1250 [Who? Discuss.] 17:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

I'll try to checkin for the monday. Thanks for the links and the timely notification. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:39, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi there TheDJ. Your recent edit to the above page caused an orphaned trailing </div> tag to be included in the editnotice (see preceding edit) and your edit for context) and this is causing the interface display after the editnotice to be broken, manifesting as a visible font issue on the bottom half of the edit page. Do you mind cleaning this up? I don't have the bits for it, or I would have done so before notifying you. Thanks in advance. Gavia immer (talk) 19:49, 16 October 2010 (UTC)
