Welcome to Wikipedia![edit]

Hello Netizen, welcome to Wikipedia!

If you feel a change is needed, feel free to make it yourself! Wikipedia is a wiki, so anyone (yourself included) can edit any article by following the Edit this page link. Wikipedia convention is to be bold and not be afraid of making mistakes. If you're not sure how editing works, have a look at How to edit a page, or try out the Sandbox to test your editing skills.

You might like some of these links and tips:

If, for some reason, you are unable to fix a problem yourself, feel free to ask someone else to do it. Wikipedia has a vibrant community of contributors who have a wide range of skills and specialties, and many of them would be glad to help. As well as the wiki community pages there are IRC Channels, where you are more than welcome to ask for assistance.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me on my talk page. Thanks and happy editing, -- JoanneB 23:16, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way[edit]

I did not see how many edits you had until I left the message (I always try to do that if I encounter someone reverting vandalism while having a red 'talk page' link). I guess that most of the above you've already figured out by now, nevertheless I can't believe you haven't been welcomed before! Keep up the good work! Regards, --JoanneB 23:20, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, well. :) I do appreciate being welcomed twice in a day. Thanks. --Netizen 23:22, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Good :-) Another 'by the way': There are a lot of tools available that can be quite helpful while reverting vandalism. If you want to know more about them, just look at pages like WP:Vandalism, WP:CVU or drop me a note, if you have any questions. --JoanneB 23:26, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mira Costa High School[edit]

I'm a student at Mira Costa High School and I am presenting honest observations about my environment. Seeing as you have never set foot on the school, I believe that you calling it "nonsense" is irrational and insulting.

I did in no way mean to insult you. It's a boilerplate message. I did however add the link to "Wikipedia:Neutral Point of View" myself. I did not mean to bite you. I've been reverting several articles and when quickly observing the changes made by you contained the term "squeaky-wheel parents" near the top I suspected a dishonest contribution. Wikipedia is trying look like an encylopedia; this didn't. Please *do* contribute, but try to make it look less like prose and more like a dictionary-type definition. Thanks. --Netizen 00:48, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the revert on my page[edit]

You totally rock!  RasputinAXP  talk contribs 03:17, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Anonymous users blanking a page result in big red automated warnings sent to irc://irc.freenode.net/wikipedia-en-vandalism. Everybody was struggling to revert it first. :) PilotGuy got the second one. Cheers, Netizen 17:23, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And another one! Thanks! --Slashme 13:48, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Well, it's easier when vandals don't try to be subtle. ;) Cheers, Netizen 17:02, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

use of tag "en"[edit]

hey there, sorry if i respond now, i'm still on vacation and am only able to check my messages very briefly.

you are right! i didn't notice that en would lead to a disamb. my bad. Articles normally carry something like "name (English)" or "Name (in German)" or even "...(German language)", however i have also bumped into the abbreviated version, the language code for a language, for example de or jp. in the case you have pointed out, en is of course for English language. I'll try to backtrack on the articles where it has been used and try to correct it if necessary, thanks again for pointing it out I wasn't even aware that happened.. Gryffindor 12:04, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No biggie. :) Thanks for the reply. I just didn't know where to disambig it to, otherwise I would have done it myself. So I thought I'd ask first. Cheers, Netizen 17:21, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whitdude the Porn Star[edit]

You wrote:

This message is regarding the page Whitedude. Please refrain from adding nonsense to Wikipedia. It is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, use the sandbox. The page has since been deleted. --Netizen 01:05, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

My reply:

Oh, does this mean the Vanilla Ice page should be deleted too? He's nonsense.

It's all a matter of opinion. It's your opinion that Whitedude is nonsense. In my opinion, he's a legend. In case you're not familiar with his work, he is a porn star. (Look him up on IMDb if you don't believe me.) Some of the info I gave was an exaggeration, and the photo was fake, but I can't post his real photo since they all contain nudity.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know that. Please let me know the IMDB-link. I'll have a look at it. Here's the one for Vanilla Ice --Netizen 01:13, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, maybe I was wrong...I can't find him on IMDb...I only saw one of his films (Horny Cowgirls Gone Wild Vol. III directed by Paul Worschwitz) and he was credited for the character of "Captain Cock" as Whitedude, but on the DVD "actor profiles" section they said he was in over 230 films in his bio, and it said he was born in 1959 and it showed a photo of him with John Holmes in the 1980s before he died. Maybe Whitedude is an alias? Maybe he uses another name usually. I'll try to find out.

Here's his website:

http://whitedude.com/

It's under construction though!

http://images.google.com/images?q=whitedude&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images

The two images on the bottom of the man looking "happy" (cough, cough) are of Whitedude. I think it's one of his '80s films since he looks younger. He's got some grays now.

I'm afraid I've got the feeling you're making this all up. Please cite your sources. Please also sign your comments with four tildes (like so: ~~~~). This will automatically be replaced by your username and date. --Netizen 01:47, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why would I make something like that up?

The real madison 02:11, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you? --Netizen 02:15, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm insulted. Spare me your mockery.

And no, I'm not.

I'm an honest hard-working person. Or maybe you're just prejudiced against gays.

Yeah, I bet that's it. You just can't handle Whitedude because he's in gay porn. Well, if you ask me, that's rather sick. I don't think you should be editing pages based on your prejudice against the homosexual community - which includes myself. The real madison 02:28, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You never mentioned sexual orientation. Please cite your earlier comment if otherwise. --Netizen 02:32, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I gave you a link to an image from one of his films, which is from a gay website I frequent. http://images.google.com/images?q=whitedude&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images, I told you which one was a picture of him. Evidently you did not believe me, perhaps you just didn't WANT to because you didn't want to acknowledge that there are gay websites on the Internet. Tell me, are you gay? Do you know what it's like to be discriminated against because you're gay, ugly, or obese? I do. And it's very hurtful. The one place I can find solace -- on the Internet -- and you make fun of my sexual orientation like this. I am offended, sir. The real madison 02:35, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is verging off topic. In the future please provide verifiable evidence if you mean to contribute to wikipedia. Thanks. --Netizen 02:49, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

help[edit]

how do u insert the image (i.e stop hand on warnings or recent changes patroller)? Dog Eat Dog World

Hi Dog Eat Dog World. Both of these make use of templates. If a template is defined it may be used by writing {{templatename}}. Replacing "templatename" with the actual name of the template.
The "stop"-hand for example is part of the test4 template (can you search for it, I've removed the link to stop automated bots from attempting to subst: it on their automatic runs -- User:Tawker). (There are lots more of anti-vandal templates listed at Wikipedia:Vandalism#Warning_templates.) The "recent changes patroller" image and text is one of hundreds of "userboxes" that you can add to your user-page. These also work with templates. The one for the recent changes patroller is {{User wikipedia:RC Patrol}}. Presently I only use a single userbox on my user-page, so that's probably not a good example of their use. But you can have a look at Pilotguy's user-page, who also happens to be an RC patroller and uses quite a few them. Hope I've been helpful, cheers, Netizen 23:27, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tawkerbot's edit[edit]

Hi, sorry about that. Basically the bot takes a list of every single user page that is links to test4 (which should be subst'ed), I have slightly edited the link in question to stop it from appearing on the bot list. I know it's a little awkward but it's going to be next to impossible to stop bots from subst'ing the linked page. Sorry about that. Tawker 00:50, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Tawker. --Netizen 12:01, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion[edit]

I noticed that you tagged the page Butt pirate for speedy deletion with the reason "Defines a Neologism; joke; not encyclopedic". However, "Defines a Neologism; joke; not encyclopedic" is not currently one of our criteria for speedy deletion, so I have removed the speedy deletion tag. You can use one of our other deletion processes, proposed deletion or articles for deletion if you still want the article to be deleted. Thanks! Stifle 22:02, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. Maybe I should have gone with {{nonsense}} instead? --Netizen 22:47, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll give {{nonsense}} a try, although actually a move to wiktionary or urban dictionary might be possible. --Netizen 23:52, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Update: It's gone now. See Deletion-log. --Netizen 14:09, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available[edit]

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:57, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In response I shall say this: 3 Warnings has got to be enough. --Netizen 21:15, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to login while I was surfing Wikipedia. All of a sudden a yellow bar appeared which said I had a personal message. Here you complained about vandalism. Soon this was followed by another complaint and a final warning. Why do I get to see that while it's not my IP-number? Obviously those edits weren't done by me. Black1Night 14:24, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Black1Night. A large number of changes occurred from that IP in short time. Many legitimate and some obvious vandalism. I'm not familiar enough with wikipedia internals or networking to answer your question. Assuming that the changes indeed occurred from said IP, a common explanation might be that yours is a shared IP used by several users. This I understand is for example common for users on AOL. If this causes a problem in the future you might consider bringing it up on the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. Or drop me a note here - although I don't have administrator privileges. Hope this helped, Netizen 14:49, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The odd thing was that when I tried to figure out my own address by writing four tildes and then view the preview page, it turned out that only the last digit was different from the vandal's address. When I tried again a little later a totally different address appeared (which is mine). Black1Night 16:51, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Huh. Well, as long as you're properly logged in, even a block for your IP address should not affect you. To find out my current IP adress I usually use one of several web sites. One with an easy name is whatsmyip.org. By the way: no block was issued against 66.230.200.197 as the offender didn't continue vandalizing. Productive wikiing to you, Netizen 17:59, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NVCI technique: a "physical restraint" or not?[edit]

Section header added by me. --Netizen (talk) 15:50, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
NVCI techniques do come under physical restraints, in that a physical restraint is rendering a person helpless and in captivity through the means of using a human as the "tool" of a restraint. The 'definition' from Physical restraint is "Physical restraint refers to the practice of rendering people helpless or keeping them in captivity by means such as handcuffs, shackles, straitjackets, ropes, straps, or other forms of physical restraint." Medical restraints are designed to not cause pain, and NVCI techniques share this as, IIRC, they are designed to be both safe and keeping the dignity of the person being restrained.

In addition to those, the quote from Medical restraint is "Medical restraints are generally used to prevent people with severe physical or mental disorders from harming themselves or others." which is inherent in what I do as a Residential Support Worker[3] and we use NVCI on a day to day basis in that respect. The added benefit of using NVCI techniques as opposed to more traditional means of restraint (shackles, etc.) is that there is much more dignity preserved.

If NVCI does not deserve to be mentioned here, then where shall it go? Surely not under Unarmed combat? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nitrodist (talkcontribs) 20:51, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
