Hey[edit]

Nice to see you still around. As you probably saw, I'm trying to get Burnham back to GA. Reviewer's comments on talk page. Hope you are well. PumpkinSky talk 23:22, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad to see you back as well. Thanks for nominating Burnham to GA. Let know if you need any help with anything. I'll keep updating the cites. Ctatkinson (talk) 23:47, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to respond to any of the reviewer comments. What was that photo you had the only copy of? If needed, I'm still a OTRS person and an admin on Commons. Many of the books have no page numbers listed....do you have them or can you get them? PumpkinSky talk 23:51, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about the photo. I've had several removed from Commons unfortunately. Was there one in particular that might be of interest?
Many of the books have no page numbers because I never learned how to fully cite references in WP. The reference format in use in this article does not seem to allow for multiple cites with differing page numbers, but surely this can't be the case and I must be missing something. If I can ever get this figured out, I can go back and appropriately cite the books, although this will now be a slow update process at best.Ctatkinson (talk) 03:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know the answer to "Did the Boers not pursue him, or did they not see the shot strike the horse?" PumpkinSky talk 00:21, 11 June 2013 (UTC).[reply]
I found the cite and I've added comments to both the article and the talk page.Ctatkinson (talk) 03:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know how to do refs for books with page numbers. The photo I was thinking of was the one mentioned in the FAR last night. Both of these issues can wait til after GA as we don't need them for GA. I think you want to get this back to FA, which is fine and I'll help. Here's what I propose: 1) focus on GA issues and get GA, then 2) fix what is left at that point from the last FAR, 3) fix the refs and get photos (for photos, if you own them, submit to OTRS and Commons, which I mentioned I have the rights to do both), 4)submit to peer review, 5) submit to FAC. Montanabw and I are working on getting Montana to FA and we're not at the GA point yet. That's a far longer slog. Another point, can I setup talk page archiving for you? Your page loads very slowly. Glad to work with you. PumpkinSky talk 09:55, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your plan sounds great! I'll keep working on the GA comments and start to address the last FAR, including the issues of the photos. Sorry about my ignorance, but if you can leave me an example cite for how to do the page numbers when there are multiple references to the same book, or point me to a good example, I should be able to take it from there. Also, I definitely need help with the archive for this talk page. Many thanks!!! Ctatkinson (talk) 14:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
For refs, see how we are doing them in Montana. I can do a few samples in Burnham later today. I'll also do the archive stuff later today.PumpkinSky talk 15:52, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the archive! This page is much more usable. I also looked at the references in the Montana article and I see you used a very different style of coding from what we have in the Burnham article to more fully cite the references. This makes it clear what needs to be done. I'll finish out the GA first, and then start I'll work on updating the reference style for the Burnham article.Ctatkinson (talk) 12:31, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. Finish GA and we'll check in with the reviewer. FNs next. How attached are you to the quotes in the footnotes? Personally, I hate quotes in FNs, but eh. PumpkinSky talk 00:09, 13 June 2013 (UTC)...it's GA again, congrats!, now we should finish the refs. PumpkinSky talk 01:54, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats to you as well! Great job on getting the GA! And thanks for the many updates you have already made to the refs. I too can live without the quotes. I started to include quotes in order to defend challenges to the cites, but they really serve no other purpose.Ctatkinson (talk) 12:36, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Specific fixes[edit]

If you want FA....

  • See refs 54 and 66. Then 96. If you can find the pages for 96, I can take care of that one too.
  • Let's go with linking authors in refs, but not publishers. Well known cities such as London, Paris, Munich, New York, LA, etc don't need state or country. To get FA, consistency is a key so we need to agree on how to do things.
  • Anything left from FAR to fix other than page numbers?
  • For File:Fred and rod burnham ca1930.jpg send an email to OTRS Commons, let me know the subject line of the email, and I'll take care of it. File:Burnham skagway alaska 1899.jpg, needs an author. [[:File:Burnham in africa close up.jpg needs an author. If author is unknown, put unknown or not identified. File:Burnham churchill jul1900.jpg needs where it was published or OTRS if indeed from the family. File:Bp burnham ca1910.jpg--same issue, published or family collection, plus needs author. For File:Scout trail usgs.jpg best to use the template and fill it all in, such as where you downloaded it from. File:Blanche blick burnham in africa 1896.jpg--date, author, OTRS. File:RodFly.jpg--OTRS. File:Howard burnham c1904.jpg--publish source or OTRS. You can put all the OTRS requests in one email. OTRS commons address is permissions-commons@wikimedia.org; state the family owns the photos, you are a family member and represent them in this matter, and release to PD (which seems your intent). List the Commons URL of the photos. And yes, the standards are way higher than the last time around.
    • These issues and converting refs to sfn, with page numbers where appropriate, should keep us busy for a bit. Last touch is tweak the intro. Then we submit to PR and then to FAC. PumpkinSky talk 00:20, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • OK, I have just sent an email to OTRS Commons, with the Subject Line: "Major Burnham gallery photos", releasing these photos posted by me to Wikicommons into the public domain. I will work on the changes to the file descriptions. Ctatkinson (talk) 14:00, 18 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • File descriptions fixed. I'll work on references next. Ctatkinson (talk) 02:31, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
        • Cool. Will get that done tomorrow. If I don't post back here by 7pm your time, post on my talk page. PumpkinSky talk 02:49, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done, now we need to focus on sfn conversion and finding page numbers. PumpkinSky talk 23:17, 19 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Shangani film[edit]

I found a better ref for the last stand film and moved imdb (which is iffy at FAC) to see also. As for the Shangani film, "the film is held in the National Archives of South Africa"....where'd that info come from? If an RS, we need that as a ref and to move imdb to see also. this and and this are probably better than imdb. PumpkinSky talk 17:29, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure about the National Archives of South Africa film statement. Your ovguide willhutchins references are much better references.Ctatkinson (talk) 17:52, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They don't cover the SA archives and that's the part that really needs a ref. I found their archive site but can't find the film.PumpkinSky talk 21:40, 29 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I searched the SA archives online catalog as well and came up empty, and the Zimbabwe archives are not yet online. Since we can't cite the statement, we'll have to delete it.Ctatkinson (talk) 00:22, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I commented it out til a ref is found.PumpkinSky talk 14:19, 2 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Burnham while you are gone[edit]

The IMDB ref will probably be a problem, but I can't find a decent replacement, can you? PumpkinSky talk 20:59, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know of a few possibilities. I add one or two in this evening. Also, thank you for continuing to update the article. The reference updates are nearly done! Ctatkinson (talk) 20:13, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
All of the references have been updated (finally!), but there is one syntax error I can't seem to correct. It displays in red as: Text " CITEREFForster2007" ignored. Any ideas? Ctatkinson (talk) 14:19, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Gadget fixed it. You should send it to PR or FAC now. PumpkinSky talk 14:26, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I've submitted it to FAC. I'll keep an eye out for comments. Ctatkinson (talk) 00:04, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comments came back on the Burnham FAC. I'm addressing the first bullet now. Ctatkinson (talk) 16:28, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Burnham[edit]

It would be best if you could get that oppose stricken.--Wehwalt (talk) 00:33, 9 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll contact the author. She never commented or changed her vote even though I immediately worked on her concerns. Ctatkinson (talk) 00:43, 9 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've left a message for Nikkimaria. Ctatkinson (talk) 00:59, 9 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then you should probably leave that diff on the FAC page. I need to look it over one more time by the way, and I've been busy.--Wehwalt (talk) 13:44, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Montanabw had some excellent observations and I have been working the issues he raised. I believe I have now addressed those issues; however, he said he might need few days before he can take a look -- August is a busy month for everyone! Several days ago, I addressed or commented on the remarks left my Nikkimaria, but she has not responded, so I left a message on the FAC. Hopefully she too will get back to the FAC and let me know if she knows of any further issues I should address, or if she's now ready to withdraw her opposition. Ctatkinson (talk) 03:29, 17 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see Nikkimaria has appeared and struck her request to withdraw the article in favor of a dozen little nitpicks. Believe it or not, this is a good sign. It's time-consuming but not difficult to get the low hanging fruit of all the inconsistencies she spotted (states abbreviated or spelled out, authors not in alphabetical order, etc.) and generally worth doing. Ping me for help if you need ideas for the tougher stuff. It took awhile for me to get past all her nitpicks when she commented on my last FA, but I managed to do it. By doing all the basic cleanup, I find that if you find something you really don't want to change, the other work creates room for a discussion (and in my case, I "won" one of them). Good luck! Burnham[edit]

Was disappointed to see the nomination archived just now, and not promoted. I hope you are not too disheartened by this temporary setback and that you will nominate it again soon. If and when you do I will do my best to lend a hand again. Well done on the article so far and have a great rest of the week! :) Cliftonian (talk) 08:37, 25 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm only a casual editor/writer, but I am a very good researcher and I have excellent access to both print and online collections. If can be of any help to you, just let me know. Burnham PR[edit]

You seem to have only done the first of five steps at WP:PR. It's not showing up there. PumpkinSky talk 01:32, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Darn! It says it will be up there within an hour. I'll see if I can find my error. Ctatkinson (talk) 01:39, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The archive page now appears and I've added the history topic parameter. Hopefully it will show up on the peer review page soon. Ctatkinson (talk) 01:53, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good, it is there now. Ctatkinson (talk) 04:40, 27 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you free on Sunday? Join us for a special Wikimedia DC WikiSalon![edit]

Wikimedia DC invites you to join us for a special WikiSalon at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library's Digital Commons Center. We will gather at 3 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013 to discuss an important topic: what can Wikipedia and the DC area do to help each other? We hope to hear your thoughts and suggestions; if you have an idea you would like to pursue, please let us know and we will help!

Following the WikiSalon, we will be having dinner at a nearby restaurant, Ella's Wood Fired Pizza.

If you're interested in attending, please sign up at the event page. We look forward to seeing you there! Kirill [talk] 01:41, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for October 13[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Second Matabele War, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lord Roberts (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

IEEE technical societies[edit]

If you are a member of one or more of the IEEE technical societies, you may wish to identify yourself as such on Wikipedia. I’ve created Wikipedian categories for each of the 38 IEEE technical societies. The new Template:User IEEE member creates a userbox identifying the society and your membership grade and includes your user page in the relevant Wikipedian category. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a note. Yours aye,  Buaidh  18:16, 11 December 2013 (UTC) — IEEE Life Member[reply]
