Administrators' newsletter – May 2024[edit]
News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2024).
- Phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship review has concluded. Several proposals have passed outright and will proceed to implementation, including creating a discussion-only period (3b) and administrator elections (13) on a trial basis. Other successful proposals, such as creating a reminder of civility norms (2), will undergo further refinement in Phase II. Proposals passed on a trial basis will be discussed in Phase II, after their trials conclude. Further details on specific proposals can be found in the full report.
- Partial action blocks are now in effect on the English Wikipedia. This means that administrators have the ability to restrict users from certain actions, including uploading files, moving pages and files, creating new pages, and sending thanks. T280531
- The arbitration case Conflict of interest management has been closed.
- This may be a good time to reach out to potential nominees to ask if they would consider an RfA.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 15,000 articles awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!
- Voting for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) election is open until 9 May 2024. Read the voting page on Meta-Wiki and cast your vote here!
Question from TrevorGaeillan (00:03, 3 May 2024)[edit]
Hi there Cocobb8! Thanks so much.
I'm actually wondering how to get a 'confirmed' wiki account?? I followed the verify account instructions, but for some reason it's not letting me upload photos in order to use them in wiki pages. --TrevorGaeillan (talk) 00:03, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @TrevorGaeillan! Having your email address verified won't allow you to upload an image just yet. What you need instead is for your account to be autoconfirmed, which will happen automatically once your account is both 4 days old and you have made at least 10 edits. Once that is so, you should be allowed to upload an image. In the meantime, you can check out this help topic for how to use images once they are uploaded!Let me know if you have additional questions!Cheers, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 00:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you!! I read that detail after I submitted the question to you! Oops! haha. Thanks so much! :) TrevorGaeillan (talk) 00:16, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
- @TrevorGaeillan No worries. Feel free to let me know in the future should you have any questions about anything else! Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 00:17, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

How to change or edit the name of the Wiki page?[edit]
I submitted an article, and if published, I need the title or name of the wiki article to be edited. How do I edit this? It doesn't show anywhere on the source code.
Should I just delete and resubmit with the new name? TrevorGaeillan (talk) 01:27, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- @TrevorGaeillan, thanks for your question! Once your account is autoconfirmed and the article is published under the mainspace, you will be able to move the article to a new title (provided a valid reason for the page move). Let me know if you have additional questions!Your mentor, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 12:28, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from WatteryFire (10:28, 6 May 2024)[edit]
Are you a bot? --WatteryFire (talk) 10:28, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @WatteryFire and thanks for your question! On Wikipedia, most users are humans. However, there are a couple bots that perform automated actions (they have "bot" in their username) that would be tedious to do by hand otherwise. These bots do not have a will of their own (nor is there artificial intelligence around here) and they act under a set of algorithms, supervised by their bot creators. If you want to learn more, you can check out this documentation. So, simply put, no I am not a bot, but your human mentor here to answer questions you have about editing Wikipedia!Cheers, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 12:31, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Question from WatteryFire (12:37, 6 May 2024)[edit]
Wow Thanks, this helps a lot. How do I prevent edit wars and keep my point(if it's correct)? --WatteryFire (talk) 12:37, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- @WatteryFire, if you find yourself disagreeing with other users, the best course of action is to discuss it on the article's talk page (making sure you ping the involved parties). Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 12:39, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Tech News: 2024-19[edit]
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- The appearance of talk pages changed for all wikis, except for Commons, Wikidata and most Wikipedias (a few have already received this design change). You can read the detail of the changes on Diff. It is possible to opt-out these changes in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at remaining wikis in the coming weeks. [1][2]
- Interface admins now have greater control over the styling of article components on mobile with the introduction of the
SiteAdminHelper
. More information on how styles can be disabled can be found at the extension's page. [3] - Wikimedia Enterprise has added article body sections in JSON format and a curated short description field to the existing parsed Infobox. This expansion to the API is also available via Wikimedia Cloud Services. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 May. It will be on all wikis from 9 May (calendar). [5][6]
- When you look at the Special:Log page, the first view is labelled "All public logs", but it only shows some logs. This label will now say "Main public logs". [7]
Future changes
- A new service will be built to replace Extension:Graph. Details can be found in the latest update regarding this extension.
- Starting May 21, English Wikipedia and German Wikipedia will get the possibility to activate "Add a link". This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to all Wikipedias. These communities can activate and configure the feature locally. [8]

AfD closes[edit]
Hi Cocobb8, I was just wondering why you closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Craig Murray (disambiguation) and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gerhard Lomer as keep, given that they'd been open for less than 24 hours? I !voted keep in the Craig Murray (disambiguation) AfD, but I feel it would have been beneficial for the nomination to have remained open for longer than it was, especially as XfD discussions are usually only closed after seven days. All the best :) —a smart kitten[meow] 18:45, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hey @A smart kitten! I realized that those had over 3 keep already with no delete (or even other) !votes, and didn't see this suddenly turning over to delete consensus, so I thought it was fair to quickKeep them both. I suppose in the future I'll make them wait for longer, but I wonder what others would think about this too. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 19:46, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- It might be helpful to start a discussion on the AfD project page to see if there can be some numbers decided, like "more than 3 keeps and no other votes" or something. Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 19:49, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi. I agree, let the AfD's run even if they are doomed to fail. Some users don't check on a regular basis and there could be valid points raised. And as someone who is committed to keeping Gerhard Lomer (and who is confident zero valid points were available) it hadn't even run 24 hours. Oblivy (talk) 00:02, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Timeline for publishing?[edit]
Hi there Cocobb8!! Thanks so much for always responding!
I recently submitted an original article of a actor/voice actor, but, the tags that were automatically attached was "deprecated (unreliable) source." That's unfortunate, because I worked pretty hard to ensure that all sources were valid.
First: Why was this tag auto-attached? Second: Will this tag cause a delay in publishing?
Thanks for your help! TrevorGaeillan (talk) 02:19, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @TrevorGaeillan, thanks for your question. I believe you are talking about Draft:Ronan L. Summers? To me it looks like the article was declined for not being properly sourced. If someone mentioned a deprecated source, that's because some websites/publishers are essentially not used as Wikipedia sources. If you removed such sources, your draft has a good chance of being approved should you fix the issue mentioned below. You may also like to check out this help topic, which outlines which websites/publishers are generally considered reliable. There are a couple of unnecessary citations in your draft, however. For example, a Wikipedia article citing a Wikipedia source should not be done (you should remove them). Instead, focus on secondary and independent sources. You will also see that I've fixed the formatting of the reference list.Let me know if you have other questions, Cocobb8 (💬 talk • ✏️ contribs) 10:02, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reference list formatting and the response! :) TrevorGaeillan (talk) 23:15, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
G'day! I just want to add 1000 Schilling gold Olympic Movement : Zeus KM#3028 missing from the list "Commemorative Coins of Austria" - the two 200 schilling silver Olympic coins ARE there. Regards --Chuck380 (talk) 21:35, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
