From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Security is a very large concern for Wikipedia, especially for administrator accounts. Wikipedia is the tenth most visited site on the Internet. If a administrator account is compromised, the Main Page could be damaged. Therefore, security is very important. This WikiProject will help make the site more secure.

Current Alerts[edit]

Although some of the information here may be in violation of WP:BEANS, security of our users is more important than that essay.

Unencrypted Login[edit]

Currently, almost everyone logs into the unencrypted server. A malicious person who has many loyal users could do the following:

  1. Create a vandalbot.
  2. Wiretap the lines going towards Wikipedia.
  3. Look for logins and get the username and password.
  4. Distribute the vandalbot and username/password pairs to the loyal users.
  5. Said users begin running the vandalbot on their account.

A person could tap Internet lines at random and still could get a lot of Wikipedia logins. This would disrupt the system quite a bit.
