I am a Professor at the James Madison College of Michigan State University and in the university's Asian Pacific American Studies Program. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Cambridge (1990), my Master's degree in American Civilization from Brown University (1995) and my Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Michigan (2002). My teaching and research interests include: immigration, race, citizenship, and visual culture. I teach courses in Asian American history, immigration policy, comparative race and ethnic relations, and U.S. racial and immigration history. In these courses, I work with my students on sharing their expertise on Wikipedia and creating apps that relate to their research. I have also worked outside the academy at Common Cause, the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History, and on projects with the Michigan Humanities Council.
