Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) is a nonprofit theater organization in Sarasota, Florida founded by actor/producer/director Nate Jacobs.[1] For his contribution to to Black Theater, Jacobs earned the Larry Leon Hamlin award in August of 2022.[2]
The WBTT states that it has a commitment towards, "the broadest possible representation of individuals, experiences and perspectives in all-encompassing terms. It is an inclusive concept encompassing, without limitation, race, color, ethnicity, culture, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation or identity on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, religion or lack thereof, age, economic class, educational level, language, immigration status, physical mobility and ability, and marital and parental status."[3]
"The Westcoast Black Theatre Troup is one of the few Black Theater companies in the country with a majority white audience and support network. The company struggled for a decade before finances stabilized and the troupe was able to buy two buildings which now house theaters, rehearsals, educational programs, and administrative offices."[4]
The Twenty Third Season of the Theater Troupe included a rendition of "Guys and Dolls,"[5] and his own productions including “American Dreams” where "he explores the struggles and the triumphs” of others seeking to fulfill their own dreams."[6]
