Untitled[edit]

Name is often written with the charcter 袾 instead of 祩 (for example 総合仏教大辞典法蔵館 2005, page 665). The pronunciation should be correspondingly Zhū Hóng for 袾宏.　see also 日本大百科全書（ニッポニカ）: 袾宏岩波世界人名大辞典: 雲棲袾宏世界大百科事典: 雲棲袾宏

Updates to Article[edit]

I have made a number of updates to this article to attempt to provide a more balanced view of Yunqi Zhuhong (including his name). The existing article had an overtly pro-Catholic tone without exploring any of Zhuhong's contributions to the Pure Land tradition, in addition to "weasel words", etc.

Name changed from "Zhu Hong" to "Yunqi Zhuhong" to more closely match how he is specified in Chinese-language sources.
I broke out his writings into to preserve the Catholic opposition (of which I have no source of information), and his Pure Land Buddhist writings based on a newer book on Chinese Buddhism by Charles B. Jones titled Chinese Pure Land Buddhism: Understanding a Tradition of Practice.
I changed "Anti-Catholic" to "Catholic Opposition" to avoid potential weasel words.

This article still needs more updates and more sources, due to the importance of Zhuhong to Ming-Dynasty religious discourse, but this is a start. --Ph0kin (talk) 22:00, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I Tried...[edit]

The article in earlier drafts tended to fixate on Yunqi Zhuhong's rebuttal of Catholicism, but the language was inflammatory and lacked an inline citations. I tried to find any citations, but it turns out that Zhuhong wrote comparatively little about Catholicism and Matto Ricci. Given the quality of the text, I decided to rewrite the content to something that sounded more neutral and tried to cite what Catholic sources I could. The back-and-forth between the Jesuits and Chinese Buddhists at the time is historically important, but I felt the article as written gave undue weight to Zhuhong while making some uncited correlations to other, more staunchly anti-Catholic figures at the time. So, this section has almost been entirely rewritten and intended to balance out Zhuhong's other writings and work. P.S. I also removed the "help" banner since I believe it has a sufficient number of citations on various topics, and the language is more compliant with Wikipedia best practices.
