Given name[edit]

Rabbi Joseph Karo (introduction to כסף משנה) writes that he heard that the rabbi's name was אינוידאל. Not sure how that name should be pronounced or transliterated. Can anyone help? Does anyone know of any similar name in Spanish or French or any other language? -- -- -- 01:49, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vidal is a very common Catalan family name (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidal), I personally know a few of them. You will not find it in French nor Spanish, because in the areas where Vidal lived Occitan and Catalan was/is used (two related languages). In Tolosa (nowadays Tolouse, in France) they used to speak Occitan. He moved further south to Vilafranca de Conflent (a few km from where I live, by the way) and then to Barcelona (where I was born), in both places Catalan was the only language sopken at that time. It must be noted that mentioning Spain and France for those ages is pretty wrong, as none of them existed (Conflent was taken by the French from the Catalans on 1659 and the whole Arangonesse-Catalan crown was defeated by the Castilians around 1714 in the framework of the European Succession War). 136.252.163.126 (talk) 10:46, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
