Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that "Homesteading" as it is currently worded (10/28/2012) be merged here to "Urban homesteading", and that the resultant "Homesteading" page then become a REDIR to the Homestead DISAM page. Even though the Homesteading page is older, Urban homesteading seems to be better written and more all-encompassing, as well as more informative, and the intent of the article is clear and distinct from simple Homesteading. All four reasons for merger apply here: duplicate, context, text, and overlap. GenQuest (talk) 17:56, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

-moved misplaced comment from other talk page-

DISAGREE - while I agree with the assessment of the current relative weights of the 'urban homesteading' vs 'homesteading' articles, the two are not the same, and 'urban homesteading' is, in fact, an off-shot of the older (pre-internet) movement. (Hence, there are many more people willing to work on an article on urban homesteading, rather than the more rural version.) IMO it would be more appropriate to improve the 'homesteading' article and link to the urban sub-variation off it, rather than to merge. In particular, the 'homesteading' article has the potential to be international in coverage, while the urban homestead movement is much more USA-centric.Kerani (talk) 01:43, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
DISAGREE - I could rehash what Kerani said, but there's not much point in doing that. Brimba (talk) 15:15, 30 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This still does not address the fact that right now, articles that link to the simple "Homesteading" article are all over the board; for instance, historical articles referring to the Copus massacre or the Oklahoma land rush are being directed to "Homesteading" instead of an article relating to the Homestead act; while contemporary article links such as Downshifting or simple living refer to a more modern—and differing in meaning—article (more akin with the idea of "Urban farming"). There are many many more examples of this tangled mess (see What links here).GenQuest (talk) 16:55, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the mis-linking is an issue, but with a tool like 'What links here' it is fairly (imo) easy to fix. A merger - and esp a merger that subverts an article on an older & more pervasive subject for one on a newer & shinier topic - does not fix the problem. I support the idea of fixing the misdirects. I don't see that a merger is needed or is the best fix for the misdirects.Kerani (talk) 11:27, 25 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. I came here for information on homesteaders/homesteading for when the government was giving away land. I need that for a school project. this is not it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.11.49.60 (talk) 22:33, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree for reasons stated by Kerani above. Improper linking can be fixed easily. Karmos (talk) 01:22, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree for histoical purposes, homesteading and urban homesteading ate two seprate toppics. As for the links, the solution is those should be improved in the original articles and not a replanting of the garden. Geraldshields11 (talk) 19:32, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Consensus: Seems favors the status quo. I am withdrawing my Proposal to Merge. ThanX for your input. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 23:13, 28 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Not done

Agree. This article should be merged into the agriculture based article Homestading or be renamed Urban Homesteading (Agriculture) to differentiate it form the government housing programs called Urban Homesteading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Diderot1 (talkcontribs) 01:44, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GenQuest - thank you for working on these topics. If there is anything you would like help with on improving the Homesteading articles, please let me know what I coudl do to help.Kerani (talk) 00:32, 30 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
