Propulsion[edit]

I deleted this: Fuel Capacity, 97,140 gals. Lenton, American Submarines, has it 389 tons; can somebody confirm? Also, I left in "two 126-cell main storage batteries" & added the maker, Exide. None of the other spec boxes have it, & I'm inclined to add it to all U.S. wartime subs. Comment? Trekphiler 09:33, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sponsoring this sub[edit]

What is "sponsoring a sub?" Did the sponsor or convince the Navy to buy it, or just get the honor of breaking a bottle of bubbly over the bow at the launch? A link to an article explaining this would be helpful, or perhaps this article could say that the person christened the ship if their only involvement was to say "I christen thee USS Growler" before smashing the ersatz champagne. The text says Mrs. Robert L. Ghormley sponsored it while the infobox says it was Mr Robert L. Ghormley. In either case Ghormley was an admiral. so his title should probably be included. Of the 2, it was most assuredly Mrs Ghormley, and I'll make that edit. It is always a woman, sometimes notable in her own right, sometimes notable for her husband, sometimes related to the ship's namesake, and sometimes all three. The sponsor of a ship is much akin to a godmother to the crew during its many iterations. Jackie Kennedy was sponsor of USS Lafayette (SSBN-616); an image is on that page. First patrol lacks a lot of info[edit]

Curious as to why no mention of the captain's name (Howard Gilmore) or of fourth Japanese destroyer and 'game' of tag and silent running and depth charges and damage to submarine (propellers and diving planes).

Or of the repairs needed after first patrol, and done upon Growler's return to base.

Plus, why no mention of a lot of crew member names; especially the captains ? ? ?

Pearl Harbor[edit]
