I've included a comment, gleaned from a flyer [1] for the Ashbrook & Powers book, which refers to Puccini's 'over-development of the secondary character' as being a major contribution to his failure to complete the work. The comment needs checking out by someone with access to the full book, and probably should be relegated to a footnote. (It is however one of those comments which seem fairly self-evident and add to an appreciation of the importance of the aria! ...Later - I now find it is from the text on the back cover, available at amazon)
