Marine Commander Surname[edit]

I have been informed that the surname of "LTC Kurgis", the Marine commander to whom Capt. Oba surrendered in 1945, may be incorrect. An editor claiming to be his relative stated that the spelling is "Kirgis", and that all the sources have it wrong. Unfortunately, this testimony is inadequate against verification by otherwise reliable sources. The editor's testimony, by itself, constitutes a Primary Source. Firstly, while my first source was a list of names of Marine Corps Officers, my second source, an official United Nations document from the Regional Cartographic Conference for Asia and the Far East, clearly states Colonel Howard G. Kirgis. Given, that his rank changed several times, being called by Captain in one source should not make the source inadequate, as he is referred to as Captain, Colonel, and eventually BGen in other sources. I will be in contact with the United States Marine Corps in order to obtain official documentation of his name spelled properly as Kirgis, as well as contact the original source who misspelled his name by spelling it phonetically, rather than accurately. What are the reputable sources supporting his name spelled as Howard G. Kurgis? The sources I have found are news sources. It is acknowledged that even reputable news sources can contain errors. Furthermore, his name published as "Kurgis" in many news articles is simply the passing along from news source to news source, and therefore is considered only one news source, not separate ones. I would presume that obtaining official Marine Corps documentation of his name spelled properly, and perhaps confirming that there was indeed no Colonel Howard G. Kurgis that was ever in the Marine Corps, would be a sufficient source to prove his name is Howard G. Kirgis. Thank you for continuing to work with me on this and get Col.
