Rotary International or Rotary - which is the page about?

The recent removal of the geographic coordinates or RI "An organization does not have a location as such" and the subsequent undo have prompted me to bring up a thought I've been mulling over....

The page is titled 'Rotary International' but it is really about the Rotary clubs and their organization, history, etc. Rotary International is the headquarters organization which has offices in several countries (7 I think) with it HQ in Evanston, Illinois, USA.

Should this be made clear in the article? or maybe have separate pages? or a name change to 'Rotary'?. Ariconte (talk) 05:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Membership Demographics

From the article:

Its membership tends towards the middle-aged and wealthy. This is often because people who join Rotary do so for life and become wealthy and middle-aged through time and with the help of the inter-personal skills developed as a Rotarian. The clubs have some exclusivist membership criteria: reputation and business or professional leadership is a specific evaluation criterion for issuing invitations to join, and they limit representation from a specific profession or business to a percentage of a specific club's membership. One can contact a Rotary club to enquire about membership but can join a rotary club only if invited; there is no provision to join without an invitation as each prospective Rotarian requires a sponsor who is an existing Rotarian.

This block says the membership tends to be this way based on networking done as a Rotarian, but then continues to say that membership is restricted. I would suspect membership tends to be middle-aged and rich (and possibly male WASP) because that would be the demographics invited to join more often than not. This section needs more research or needs to drop the line, "This is often because people who join Rotary do so for life and become wealthy and middle-aged through time and with the help of the inter-personal skills developed as a Rotarian."

It may be the goal of the Rotary Club to offer networking and a way for personal advancement, but without some neutral polling, I don't think it is fair to say this is a reality. Travis Garris (talk) 19:37, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Copyright

I have just deleted a large chunk because I think it was coppied mostly verbatim from the Rotary International Mamual of Procedure (see http://www.webcitation.org/5Ynq4BtW3).

I think other sections of the article may have same problem. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copyright_violations for guidance.

Categories

For some reason there has been an edit war over the categories for this article. Note that this subject is also a category category: Rotary International. Right now, that category is a subcategory of category:Fraternal and service organizations and category:poliomyelitis. Rather than removing the service org category from that Rotary category, perhaps it would make more sense to move the categories on this article to the Rotary category. Roman Catholic ban

The article should perhaps discuss the ban that was given by the Holy See against Catholics joining Rotary. The ban dates from the 1950s, and I don't think it has been in force since Vatican II, but it's interesting to note the historical motives for the interdict. Reference to Hunter S. Thompson

It is unclear to me why a a reference to Rotary International on The Office is culturally significant, but one regarding Fear and Loathing is trivia.Yosh76063 (talk) 06:48, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Category:Rotarians

Can anyone please create a Category:Rotarians? We have one for fellows of the foundation and for leaders, but not for members at large. Many politicians and businesspeople are members, so this could be useful. I don't know how to create one.Zigzig20s (talk) 20:17, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Nazi Germany Focus

The history during wartime seems to be a diatribe focusing only on Nazi Germany and its treatment of Rotary clubs. I feel this should be a separate article because it diverts from the focus on Rotary International and instead obsesses about how the Nazis dealt with Rotary. A separate article could carry this forward but here it detracts.

Similarly there could be discussion about how the Japanese dealt with Rotarians, established or comandeered clubs in Mukden, dealt with Rotarians in occcupied Shanghai etc --but this does not help give any background on the history of Rotary International - which is the purpose of this article.

Rotary is made up of clubs and clubs of members.

Moreover "War Time" is really dealing with the Second World War - and only here from a European point of view.

I agree

The section seems irrelevant considering how benign the content is and irrelevant it is to the international and current context of the club. It's not the the club was a secret Nazi organization. Think it was probably crafted by someone with a tinfoil hat.

relationship with masonery

Minority membership

How can the Chinese, Japanese, Indians, et al., be 'minorities' in their own countries, since this is what this section talks about? If it is instead talking about global non-white membership (the implication being that whites constitute the largest global contingent of Rotarians, racially), then why use the term 'minority', which is ambiguous in this case?

Please get someone at Rotary Int'l headquarters to add a section explaining the ten or more types of Rotary entities. Wiki only explains levels (District/Zone) and one type of Rotary club

Please get someone at Rotary Int'l headquarters to add a section explaining the ten or more types of Rotary entities. Wiki now only explains levels (District/Zone) and one type of Rotary club (the old f2f clubs).

There are at least these several types of Rotary entities:

Traditional face-to-face (f2f) Rotary clubs (....the only type Wiki explains), eClubs, NRG clubs, Rotaractors, Interactors, Rotary Community Corps, university-based Rotary Peace/Conflict-resolution Postgraduate Research Centers, Rotarian Vocational/Leisure Networks (e.g., Rotarian Physicians, Rotarian Golfers, Rotarian Antique Car Collectors, etc.), Rotarian Action Groups, etc.

Citations Need in The first years of the Rotary Club

This doesn't sound encyclopedic. And usually it is the sentences with the citation needed tag. Request for semi-protection due to repeated promotion vandalism

In the history of the main article page, both @Fabrickator: and @Viniciusrfi: have been engaged in reverting blatantly promotional edits by users coming in from IP addresses.  Done - the page has now been set to be semi-protected by @Deepfriedokra: (thank you!). I will note that the page has only been semi-protected until June 14, 2020, and it seems that someone has been trying to inject the same promotional text via an IP address since back in January 2020. Hi @Deepfriedokra: and @Dyork: Thanks for protecting the page. As a Rotaract member in Brazil, the insistence of the editions for the self-promotion of member Jean dos Santos Silva caused me indignation. We also had problems with the Portuguese version of this page, in which he also reinserted content in which he promoted himself. So I sought out the authority responsible for ensuring the public image of Rotary in the region (called District 4760) of which the insistent editor is a part. They already assured me that they were going to talk to him about it. That way we will continue to watch for future changes to see if it will repeat the behavior.

And sorry for the bad use of the tools to ask the protection. I was really unaware of the discussion tools and requests for page protection.
