Edmonton[edit]

So what then is the "maximum" security prison located in the NE quarter of Edmonton then? Not maximum?— Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.112.65.49 (talk) 00:25, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

how about kingston?[edit]

as far as i know, Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston, ON. is also a Maximum security prison. here's a link for anyone in doubt: http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/facilit/institutprofiles/kingston_e.shtml — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.50.68.31 (talk) 01:47, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there are several maximum security prisons in Canada, Kingston being perhaps one of the most well known. However, as per the article description, this SHU is a "super-maximum security" prison where, presumably, the security is even more "maximum" than the usual, everyday sort of "maximum", and, where, presumably, the guards "give 110%" every day instead of the usual 100%.Garth of the Forest 04:13, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In Canada SHU stands for "special handling unit"? In USA, it's "security housing unit." 66.183.46.231 (talk) 07:33, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
hence the importance of stating the full meaning of an acronym upon its first use in a given context. I find that there are few things more annoying than people speaking in industry or company or region specific acronyms without explaining what they stand for within the context they are being used - especially when speaking to industry or company newcomers and/or external audiences. No references[edit]

This article currently offers no reliable sources to verify facts (e.g. security classification of this prison relative to others, transport or handling policies, population, etc.) There are two external links given, both to a site that appears to be primarily promoting a book. Tagged appropriately. --Ds13 (talk) 01:17, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is also the link to the Corrections Canada page about a facility at Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines; however it describes a minimum security facility. I'm assuming perhaps part of the facility was converted after April 2007 (the last update at the Corrections Canada link provided) to it's current "super-maximum" status, or the SHU is a different unit. Either that or citizens might expect to see "Mom" and "Nurget" riding their hogs down Main Street of your town any day now... ;-). Seriously - better info available here: http://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/text/pblct/lt-en/2006/31-2/3-eng.shtml. I'll add it; feel free to find and add some more references yourself rather than complaining about the existing lack thereof.Garth of the Forest (talk) 01:42, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Other SHU's[edit]

There are "SHU"'s in many Canadian prisons. It's not just a name for one particular prison but rather a term Corrections Canada uses for a segregation unit akin to "The Hole". -- œ 05:41, 29 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 23 April 2016[edit]

The result of the move request was: Moved. No objections, and since we don't currently have articles on the other two sub-institutions, and as the nom says, they aren't fully separate anyway, it seems OK to broaden the scope of this to be the whole facility.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:17, 9 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Special Handling UnitRegional Reception Centre – The official site linked on this article refers to the facility by the name Regional Reception Centre and described the Special Housing Unit as a sub-unit of that facility, not as a separate institution as the first line of this article currently indicates.
