Does anyone know how the NPI checksum works?

Try this website. It's a free NPI check digit(checksum) tool for the health care industry

  • Note: The above page only checks 9-digit numbers. The NPI is 10 digits long.

  • update Feb 9, 2008 - The NPI number uses the Luhn forumla to calculate. You put in 9 numbers, it runs through an algorithm (google it), and generates the 10th digit, which is a check digit used for validation.
This needs a citation .... Anyone? --Mistsrider (talk) 19:58, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
