Not paid, just helping translate.[edit]

I was not paid to create this page--the author of the French wiki page on Mazen was looking for help making an English version. I am decent at French translation--married to a francophone wife--and was able to help. There was a version on the French wiki for Mazen, and not one on the English wiki---I am familiar with French translation, and I am "known" for drawing portraits of human rights activists, so the author of that wiki asked me to write an English version. I assumed I couldn't just randomly upload another person's photo of Mazen (I am new to wikipedia and unsure about copyright issues)--so I used a photo and drew an interpretation of it to avoid copyright infringements. Ah, being asked on Wikipedia by someone who doesn't have a conflict of interest is fine. No worries about the conflict of interest then. But how did you manage to create File:Mazen_al-Hamada.png? I took a screen shot of one of the videos Mazen appeared in---it was a dumb, knee-jerk attempt to add an image to the wiki, as there are no images of Mazen on Wiki-Commons except the ones I've made (which keep being removed). Uploading an image protected by copyright wasn't the smartest move but that can be fixed of course. As I mentioned in the deletion discussion on Commons an image in an article is nice but not a must.

So about these sketches you added to this article, and other articles: personally I don't find something wrong about adding a sketch to a BLP article. What I didn't like (& I suspect it's what mostly bothered others as well) was that you put your name and username in the caption. It appeared as if you only added the sketch to promote your artwork. Our styleguide (specifically MOS:CREDITS) recommends not to credit the image author unless they are independently notable (e.g. portrait of Albert Einstein taken by Ferdinand Schmutzer).

Before you add the sketch back to this article, I'd prefer to hear some opinions by other users as well though. – NJD-DE (talk) 01:38, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for all of your help! I am sorry for all the newbie mix-ups. I can see why the addition of my user name to the sketches looked like self promotion. I created the captions when uploading the images to wiki commons, and thought I needed to label where the images came from. I agree that no image might be better for now--I removed the PNG in question.
