Improvements to airports list[edit]

The airport list has a couple of readability issues: - Has no clear status of Completed/Under Construction/Proposed - Passengers are a mix of demand and capacity. Only capacity should be relevant here Any comments before I change the table?

I do think it makes the table more readable having the pictures at the bottom of the table instead of embedded - perhaps we can do the same for the other transport modes?? 77696b6975736572 (talk) 05:07, 27 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]


Untitled[edit]

There are no sources proving the correctness of this list, its lack of many structures, such as Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Railway, Qingzang railway, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Fehmarn Belt bridge, Qatar Bahrain Causeway etc. Aotearoa (talk) 16:58, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's always going to be incomplete, it's just a question of doing our best to improve it rather than moan about the missing items. I've thrown a couple of airports and railways onto the list. Although we should wait until construction begins, otherwise it will just become unusable - that criterion would have knocked the last two off your list at the time you wrote it, and it would also exclude Britain's High Speed 2 railway which looks like it's heading for US$50bn at the moment.Le Deluge (talk) 15:55, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Should be renamed Incredibly Patchy List of some of the world's most expensive transport infrastructure (whatever that means)[edit]

This is one of WP's fucking stupid lists that are simply incomprehensible. First and second entry: Some road systems. Everything else: Mostly bridges. So how many countries are there in the world where the complete road system (or even just a major part) is not more expensive than some bridge? Autobahn, anyone? (No, it's not fucking stupid because some entries are missing, it's fucking stupid because the whole idea behind it is fucking stupid.)

Missing project in the list[edit]

I think we should add to this list the Interoceanic Canal of Nicaragua which is currently being built by China.--Forich (talk) 20:16, 20 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Very problematic article[edit]

This article seems to me to be problematic enough that it should either be deleted or split into manageable parts or completely revamped. At the moment this is an almost completely useless comparison of apples to oranges. Comparing such vastly different projects without being at all systematic, and not even controlling for inflation is more deceptive than it is informative. We have a motley crew of projects ranging from full highway systems to single public transit line extensions, to airport terminals, to bridges to railway lines, etc.... What's arguably a worse problem is the failure to control for inflation. Comparing the nominal cost of a project from the 1990s to one today is totally misleading, not to even get into much older projects. I would suggest basing the list on reliable sources which compile a list specifically intended to make a comparison like this, and not making an ad hoc listing which appears far more authoritative than it is. Otherwise we should delete the article which I think does a disservice to readers. Peregrine981 (talk) 13:24, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

move[edit]

After the deletion discussion it seems that a majority was in favour of re-naming the article. Suggestions included:

  • List of expensive transport infrastructure projects
  • List of transportation megaprojects
  • List of costly infrastructure projects

Personally I would favour List of transportation megaprojects, as it fits nicely with the existing page List of megaprojects. Also a "megaproject" seems to be fairly well defined in the literature as a project costing 1 Billion USD+. Expensive and costly are rather vague. Great job, Peregrine981, I endorse your choice and your perhaps bold action in going ahead and moving it. Editor Coffee's closing of the AFD with specific name "List of expensive transport infrastructure projects" was perhaps over-reaching, though I appreciate their at least coming to a choice, instead of kicking the can down the road. And by the way, I think the reason that "expensive" is bad, is that it suggests price (or cost) is high relative to value achieved, or high relative to lower price that might have been attainaible. I like "costly" as it just suggests high price (or cost), and conveys that this article will include a focus on monetized costs (which is great that it does). I agree though that megaprojects conveys big cost, too, and the chosen title also seems to be the shortest possible.  :) --doncram 18:19, 31 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Future projects[edit]

During the AfD discussion it was discussed that the list should exclude projects which have not yet been completed, per WP:CRYSTAL and because cost estimates for such projects are notoriously unreliable. Any differing opinions? Peregrine981 (talk) 22:57, 26 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
