Style question[edit]

Attempting to reconcile multiple listings of places on the lists. I think I understand but can someone give me a brief run through so that I can edit uniformly.

@66.74.176.59: - thank you for your efforts to inprove the article. Firstly, we need to be mindful of WP:OVERLINK. Discounting links from the flags, we shouldn't be linking the names of countries where that country is the same as today. Thus France and Denmark are not linked, but the United Kingdom is. Secondly, we need to remember that several modern countries did not exist in these times - Belgium (1830), Germany (1871), Italy (1861) etc. Hanseatic towns were separate entities to the countries that surrounded them. These ships flew their own flags. Think of them as city-states like Singapore, Macau and Hong Kong.
Taking individual entries, I work on the principle that the flag after the ships name establishes that we are talking about that country, unless stated otherwise. Therefore we don't need to state that country in the text relating to that entry. Taking the entry for 3 January -
The latter is in keeping with WP:COMMONNAME and WP:OVERLINK. There has been a recent discussion about the linking of countries from the flag templates, but the offer of a debate over the issue was not taken up, so the status quo remains.
Ship types - the word "ship" means that the type of vessel is not stated by sources. It does not mean a full-rigged ship. Other rigs and ship types are named and linked where known. East Indiaman, collier etc are ship types. Many East Indiamen were full-rigged ships, many colliers were brigs. If this is known, then it is stated, e.g. The collier, a brig, ran aground...
Typos - Yes, I make a lot of typos, but I am especially careful not to in the names of ships and historic spellings of place names. Please fix any typos or flag them up here if not sure. Hello I just found your wiki page, I have an interest in Shipwrecks and would like to get involved here. Is this an organized group or just individuals adding to the page ?.
