The info in this article, although unsourced, is consistent with French Wikipedia and the 1922 Encyclopaedia Britannica online. And yet other published sources (Elizabeth Greenhalgh 2014, Holger Herwig 2009) have him already commanding V Corps, part of Sarrail's Third Army, around Verdun in September 1914.
