Compound wall[edit]

The article states "All the Jain temples are now enclosed within a compound wall constructed in early 10-11th century". The compound wall is probably from mid 19th century. When the Jain community in the region rediscovered the temple complex and started the repair and reconstruction. However the compound contains several Chandella era temples. The Parshvanth and Adinath temples exist more or less in their original form. The Shantinath temple incorporate two Chandella era structures and was built about 2 centuries ago (Niraj Jain, p. 20). When Cunningham visited Khajurao the second time in 1865, the construction of the Shantinath temple had begun, and he was not permitted to enter. There are several smaller temples, many of them are reconstructions of small temples form the Chandel period. I have read somewhere that a family of Nagaud was responsible for the boundary wall.
