Hair ice[edit]

FYI, the German Wikipedia has a lot more information on hair ice aka frost beards: de:Haareis, including links to literature by Alfred Wegener, Gerhart Wagner, and Christian Mätzler explaining that the growth of hair ice also requires the presence of specific funghi.

It should be noted, that ice ribbons and frost flowers seem to be different phenomena. The English article does not distinguish between them, though.

Further, the English article states, that the term ice flower refers to frost flowers as well. I can't speak for the English-speaking world, but in several European languages, the direct translation of ice flower (de:Eisblume, nl:IJsbloemen) describes a completely different phenomena. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 22:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Frost castles?[edit]

Do the terms frost castle and ice castle really refer to frost flowers rather than to needle ice, a similar phenomenon? At least needle ice can look a lot more like castles than frost flowers. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 14:03, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
