Indeed. But it can be defined on much more abstract spaces, just like the Poisson (point process), which the Cox (point) process generalizes.

It's difficult for me to imagine how this stub could be extended to a reasonably sized article. I propose merging this stub with the article on the Poisson point process, which has a section on the Cox process that covers most of what is written here. The only problem there is that the already long article on the Poisson point process gets longer. The Poisson article probably needs to split into two.
