Birthplace[edit]

His birthplace is Tomari village in Kunashiri Island (currently occupied by Russia), not Tomari in mainland Hokkaidō. It seems like that English version of the Wikipedia article on this village doesn't exist. His name Chiharu (千春) came from Chishima (千島) that Kunashiri belongs to and spring (春).
