Redirect to Rift?[edit]

After bouncing there twice I gave some thought to this, and my immediate feedback is that a chasm is not something like the Great Rift Valley - geologic rifts are wide, not deep and steep, which is what a chasm is to me; either what's below a high cliff edge, or the maw of a usually-narrow canyon; although the Grand Canyon is definitely a chasm, to me a classic chasm is something narrow - doesn't mean it can't be big, like the great canyon of the Tsangpo/Brahmaputra or some of the incredibly tough terrain in the Hindu Kush and elsewhere in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Those are chasms, not rift valleys; I think the redirects are wrong, and this should if anything redirect, or be given another entry, to Canyon...where, for example, gorge or some variation of it probably redirects to (or to throat, or something to do with gluttony or over-indulgence ;-) ). Anyway, rift strikes me as odd, and also actually incorrect; I say Canyon....Skookum1 (talk) 05:32, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added Canyon as main meaning; "chasm" can also mean a precipice, like the edge of a cliff; I usually perceive it as having two-sided meaning but I think in the British usage it can mean one-sided, i.e. the edge of a cliff, not a pair of opposing cliffs as in a canyon.Skookum1 (talk) 20:07, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

come to think of it, a gorge is also a kind of necklace/neck ornament as well as meaning throat and also, as a verb, to eat ravenously....not relevant here but maybe Gorge (disambiguation) would be a good idea....Skookum1 (talk) 20:09, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Chasm (geologic feature)[edit]

I've added Chasm, British Columbia, which is a place in BC adjacent to The Chasm (geologic feature), which is an eroded bay in a lava plateau near Clinton, British Columbia, and part of the volcanic formations of the Chilcotin Plateau Basalts. (I've since found out that its old name is the Painted Chasm which might provide a better main link than The Chasm (geologic feature). There is a stub for Chasm Provincial Park (which I just expanded), which is the entity protecting the Chasm, but I'm not certain that's the place for the eventual geological/vulcanological content of the article on The Chasm as such. I'm gonna take this up with some other editors in the BC WikiProject, including one whose interest is the province's vulcanology;, to decide whether provincial park articles are the proper place for information on the feature the park was created for; ditto Marble Canyon (Canada) and Marble Canyon Provincial Park. This is just notice there may be a third entry, or a mention of The Chasm as the namesake of what is listed. The correct name for The Chasm appears to be Chasm Formation. There's also another formation called the Deadman River Formation, see here. Black Tusk 19:23, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
