I started this stub page to correspond to sv:Kärnis , no:Stålis and nn:Stålis. This is mostly a term used by lake skaters, as opposed to Black Ice on roads. This should be filled in with translations from the above wikis Ddermott (talk) 23:33, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good step! I however believe that this should be merged with Congelation ice since that is the scientific term corresponding to e.g. sv:Kärnis. The swedish word "kärnis" is "core ice" if you translate it directly. You can have "kärnis" e.g. under a layer of snow ice ("white ice"). This transforms directly to the concept "congelation ice". In salt water ice (in the sea) you have layers (from top to bottom) of frazil ice, transition ice and congelation ice (see [1]). On a fresh water lake there is an initial very thin layer of ice created (usually with a beatiful net-like pattern) under which the congelation ice forms. The thin top layer usually melts away leaving that lovely black ice that we always dream of skating on. --Kr-val (talk) 07:20, 7 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
