I am confused by the massacre?[edit]

Fueled by the belief that Constantine wished for his sons to rule a tripartite empire after him, the military massacred Constantinian family members.[8] This massacre precipitated a redivisioning of the empire, by which Constantine took Gaul, Hispania, and Britain, while Constans acquired Italy, Africa, Dacia, and Illyricum, and Constantius inherited Asia, Egypt, and Syria.[9]

The first statement suggests that Constantine's sons were killed by the military, and the second that they then took over power. I find this very confusing. Who, exactly, was massacred?
