The Chicago Portal

Chicago is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois and in the Midwestern United States. With a population of 2,746,388 in the 2020 census, it is the third-most populous city in the United States after New York City and Los Angeles. As the seat of Cook County, the second-most populous county in the U.S., Chicago is the center of the Chicago metropolitan area, often colloquially called "Chicagoland" and home to 9.6 million residents.

Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, education, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It has the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures alone. O'Hare International Airport is routinely ranked among the world's top six busiest airports by passenger traffic, and the region is also the nation's railroad hub. The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) of any urban region in the world, generating $689 billion in 2018. The 1966 NBA Expansion Draft was the second expansion draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held from April 30 to May 1, 1966, to stock the expansion Chicago Bulls for the 1966–67 season. The Bulls selected players from the previously established teams in the league after each team protect seven players from being selected. Bulls' general manager, Dick Klein promised Red Auerbach of the Boston Celtics that he would not draft Boston's K. C. Jones, if Auerbach would share his opinions of other NBA players. The Bulls selected two from each of the nine other NBA teams, including former first overall pick Bob Boozer, three-time All-Star Johnny Kerr and one-time All-Star Len Chappell. Kerr retired as a player and was named the franchise's first head coach. Al Bianchi also retired and was named assistant coach. Klein had plans for Kerr and Bianchi as coaches all along, but because they were under player contracts Klein had to draft. Ten expansion draft picks joined expansion 1966–67 Bulls. Guy Rodgers—who was acquired in exchange for Jim King and Jeff Mullins—and Jerry Sloan were named to the 1967 All-Star Game, becoming the franchise's first All-Stars. Sloan played ten seasons with the Bulls, coached the team from 1979 to 1982 before coaching the Utah Jazz for 23 seasons. Sloan has since been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach, as has fellow draftee John Thompson who never worked for the Bulls.

The list of Alpha Kappa Alpha sisters includes initiated and honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha (ΆKΆ), the first inter-collegiate Greek-letter sorority established for Black college women.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by nine women who were known as The Original Group of 1908, and seven sophomores, who were accepted as honor initiates and are known as The Sophomores of 1910. Alpha Kappa Alpha serves the community through a membership of more than 200,000 women in over 950 chapters in the United States and several other countries. Membership is extended to female college undergraduate and graduate students. The sorority also bestows honorary membership as the highest honor.

Alpha Kappa Alpha states that since the organization's founding, "the sisterhood of Alpha Kappa Alpha has responded to the world’s increasing complexity. The sorority continues to empower communities through exemplary service initiatives and progressive programs." The sorority celebrated a centennial anniversary on January 15, 2008. (Read more...)

Selected biography

Timothy Blackstone served as president of the Chicago and Alton Railroad from 1864 through 1899. He was also a one-term mayor of La Salle, Illinois, and a founding president of the Union Stock Yards. He was also the benefactor of the James Blackstone Library in Branford, Connecticut, and a nearly identical library was donated to the Chicago Public Library by Timothy Blackstone's widow in 1902. Additionally, the Blackstone's funded Blackstone Hall at for the Art Institute of Chicago's Building. Chicago's Blackstone Library is the first dedicated branch of the Chicago Public Library system, and later his mansion became the site of the Blackstone Hotel and the Blackstone Theatre.

Selected landmark

The Rookery Building is an historic landmark located in the Loop community area of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Completed by John Wellborn Root and Daniel Burnham of Burnham and Root in 1888, it is considered one of their masterpiece buildings and once housed the office of the famous architects. It measures 181 feet (55 m), is twelve stories tall and is considered the oldest standing high-rise in Chicago. It has a unique style with exterior load-bearing walls and an interior steel frame. The lobby was remodeled in 1907 by Frank Lloyd Wright. Starting in 1989, the lobby was again restored to the original Wright design. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark on July 5, 1972. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 17, 1970 and listed as a National Historic Landmark on May 15, 1975. The name Rookery comes from the previous building on the property which became home to many birds, especially pigeons.
