Ravichandran C [ml] is a freethinker and author from the southern Indian state of Kerala. He is a teacher, orator, atheist blogger, and promoter of science and reasoning. He is known for his numerous presentations on these topics, and participation in debates[1][2][3][4][5]. He has written several books on topics stretching from science to politics. He is very active in the free-thinking, scientific, and literary areas in Kerala.[6]

Early life[edit]

Ravichandran was born in 1970 in Pavithreswaram, Kerala, India to K Chandrasekharan Pilla and P Omana Amma. After completing his high school studies at St. Jude Higher Secondary School in Mukhathala, and SN College Kollam, he obtained a BA degree in English Literature from the University of Kerala. Subsequently, he went on to earn postgraduate degrees in English Literature, Economics, Politics, History, Sociology, Philosophy, Commerce, Malayalam Literature, and Public Administration, from the same university.[7]

Career[edit]

Ravichandran entered Kerala government service in 1996 at Kerala Public Service Commission, where he worked for ten years. In 2006, he joined the Department of Collegiate Education, under the University of Kerala, as an assistant professor of English, and worked at the Government College Munnar, Government College Nedumangad, University College Thiruvananthapuram (2007-2017), and at Women's College in Thiruvananthapuram, Since September 2020, he is working as an assistant English professor at the Government Polytechnic in Ezhukone, Kollam.

Activism[edit]

As a rationalist, atheist and humanist, Ravichandran has delivered more than 750 lectures and participated in numerous debates throughout the state of Kerala, elsewhere in India, in Australia, and in the UK. He has written several books on such varied topics as biological evolution, neurology, autism, vaccination, history, religion, philosophy, Indian constitution, and politics. He played a prominent role in exposing the anti-vaccination sentiment that affected the health sector in Kerala, and educating the society on the importance of vaccination.

Ravichandran made contributions to the rationalist revolution, which was part of the Kerala reformation movement. He coined the phrase "fact-based politics, evidence-based medicine, humanism-based society," as the leading principle towards becoming a progressive society. He wrote the book "Naasthikanaaya Daivam," based on The God Delusion by renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. Later, Ravichandran also translated Richard Dawkins' The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution into Malayalam. In 2018, he received the "science literature award" for 2017, from Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment for translating the book The Tell-Tale Brain written by neurologist Vilayanur Ramachandran, into Malayalam, under the title "Masthishkam Katha Parayunnu."[8]
