"Chúng ta của hiện tại" (roughly meaning "Present as We are") is a song recorded by Vietnamese male singer-songwriter Son Tung M-TP and listed in his debut album, Chúng ta (Us) (2020). It was Son Tung M-TP who composed and performed the song, released on the twentieth of December 2020 alongside its MV on YouTube under the cover of a single paving the way for the album. This is the second composition within his single of 2020, listed after "Có chắc yêu là đây".

The song has made huge accomplishments. It ranked first on the Billboard LyricFind Global Chart, becoming the man's second composition that reached its peak after "Hãy trao cho anh" (roughly meaning "Give It To Me"). In Vietnam, the song initially positioned tenth on the Top Vietnamese Songs, and later, fourteenth on the Billboard Vietnam Hot 100 after its one-year release, when both charts were officially introduced. Its footage was recognized as the "Music Video of the Year" at the WeChoice Awards 2020.

Settings and Release[edit]

On December 7th, Son Tung M-TP posted a photo on his official Facebook profile. Its content was about an exclusive actress named Hai Tu, a newbie working for M-TP Talent, leading to the public's speculation that he was teasing his latest musical composition.[1] After several days, that is, on December 15th, he published its advertisement poster on Facebook. Two days later, he officially released the trailer of his MV "Chúng ta của hiện tại" uploaded on YouTube.[2] One day before its release, the album "Chúng ta" was published on Facebook and announced to enable pre-ordering on Apple Music.[3][4]

Music Video[edit]

The MV was released at 20:20 (GMT +7) on YouTube thanks to the website's premiering feature. Before its publication, the music video enabled viewers to pre-notify them. Its given settings led the audience to the decade of old generations with the mild style of retro vintage.

Content[edit]

The story is about a mafia of youth. Its advent was a formal gathering of the big boys poking each other amidst a quarrel. Albeit their discontentment with the others, the goal of overcoming the protagonist remained common, as to put on a par with former seniors, he was quite preponderant. The one who was seated on the other side should be an infamous gangster as well, conspiring to overthrow the main figure. Nevertheless, the protagonist haughtily stepped out of the meeting, displaying his identity packed with confidence. As he was about to enter his automobile, a muse filled with innocence came into sight. Upon his arrival at the estate, he was wondering who this girl could be, to the extent that, the image of a dancing girl and falling leaves enveloped his mind. He thus sent for his intimate followers to fetch some data about the girl.

Ending[edit]

The MV ending has left the viewers puzzled, causing some to wonder. In particular, its after-credit, open to space or time-space settings of huge difference, led to the public's speculation about its sequel.

Commercial Accomplishment[edit]

In the words of Son Tung M-TP's production team, with the number of real-time viewers while premiering on YouTube being 1.5 million, Son Tung has become a solo vocalist, possessing the most viewed MV online, only ranked after two South Korean bands, BTS and Blackpink. The music video was listed in the YouTube Top Trending of multiple countries, such as Taiwan, Japan, Poland, Korea, Singapore, Czech, Sweden, Canada, Hungary, Germany and Malaysia. "Present As We Are" was introduced in Catalogue 1 of Billboard's LyricFind Global chart.[5][6][7] After nearly one year of release, that is, on January 14th, 2022, when both charts, Billboard Vietnam Hot 100 and Billboard Top Vietnamese Songs, were published, the song ranked 14th and 10th, respectively.

On December 13th, on his official fan page, Son Tung M-TP posted a photo whose text was "Call me at 1900068887!".[8] At that point, Hai Tu also uploaded a picture with the content, "Text me at (+84)788787669".[9] Especially, if his viewers indeed dialed the former number, what was waiting for them on the other side would be a pre-recorded message that Son Tung would love to express: "We couldn't fulfill what we'd vowed".[10] The singer-songwriter collaborated with VinFast to organize a parade with a shower of automobiles and electric cars with posters behind to promote his masterpiece around HCM City.

Assessment[edit]

To raise the curiosity and expectations of his audience and fans before the release, Son Tung M-TP asked three Vietnamese artists, whose names are Tran Thanh, Dam Vinh Hung, and Ho Ngoc Ha, to pre-assess his composition.[11]

In the words of the artist Tran Thanh: "For the first time, after many years, seeing Tung perform a song about love, that is, an erotic song, rather than music of the mainstream, ended up in my extreme excitement. The trend of retro style would revive, and the entire audience would catch the bait, as these pieces should never be out of fashion, with their emotional content regarded as rejuvenescent and reminiscent of the good old days."[12]

At a time, in the words of the singer Dam Vinh Hung: "I found myself utterly surprised at the song. Initially, the arrangement of this song sounded quite decent, white it was familiar yet exotic, and I found it seemingly appealing upon my first hearing of the piece." Besides, he claimed: "If the tempo of the song were pushed by another 2 units, then the color of Son Tung's voice would have been much apparent."[11]

Controversy[edit]

In late January of 2021, a social media account uploaded a song, "R&B All Night" by KnowKnow, and claimed that "Present as We Are" and this composition share some melody. Namely, this guy was assuming that the stated song's component from the timestamp of 5:38 contains some background music identical to that of "R&B All Night" from the timestamp of 0:37. Simultaneously, they emphasized the two songs are of the same melody by up to 90%.[13] Up to February 22nd, 2021, the MV of the debated composition had been removed from YouTube due to the copyright strike by an account owner named GC.[14] This owner deemed that the MV of Son Tung M-TP had replicated the instrumental component of "Is You Mine" mastered with the style of Bruno Mars.[15] According to the same account, the production team of the MV admitted having replicated the composition of the owner yet underscored that their music video would soon be re-uploaded.[16][17][citation needed][cần dẫn nguồn]
