"Outside the Rain" is a 1981 song by the American singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks. It is the ninth song off of Nicks' debut album, Bella Donna. Whilst never released as a single it was featured on the B-side of Leather and Lace. Despite this it quickly became a fan favourite and a regular within Nicks' live setlist. Typically serving as the opener for Nicks' concerts she uses this song to transition into the Fleetwood Mac staple Dreams. Nicks has never spoken publicly about the story behind Outside the Rain however many fans speculate it to be about her affair with Mick Fleetwood[1], which she wrote about in a number of her song made at this time such as Angel[2] and Beauty and the Beast[3]. In the earlier live performances of the song Nicks would sing “Well, Mick said, ‘Stevie, it’s just one more link in the chain. Baby, don’t break it.” instead of the usual lyric “Well, it’s just one more link in the chain”, which reinforces this fan theory.

Reception[edit]

Rolling Stones says that 'On the softer side, "Outside the Rain" and "How Still My Love" clone the gauzy swirl of "Dreams."[4]'.
