Matthew Porto (July 29th 1990) is an Italian-American poet, author, literary critic and professor. Porto completed his bachelor's in English at the University of Scranton. For a year after, he lived in Tainan, Taiwan to teach English.
After coming back to the United States, Porto earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Boston University in 2016. There, he worked with Robert Pinsky and Karl Kirchwey. After his time at Boston University, Porto travelled to Greece funded by the Robert Pinsky Global Fellowship with the intent to study the greek poet Homer. Porto returned to the United States to earn a Doctorate concentrated in Creative Writing from Texas Tech in 2021.
In 2024, Porto completed a work of poems titled "Moon Grammar", which was published with Slant Books. The name is a reference to Thomas Mann’s biblical tetralogy, "Joseph and His Brothers". He mentions that his Italian heritage has large influences on his writing, particularly angels from Roman Catholicism. Although a lapsed catholic, Porto claims to be proud of his catholic roots.
Now, Porto teaches Literature and Poetry as an associate professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition to teaching, Matthew guides freedom trail tours in downtown Boston.
