The Rookie is an American television series, based on real-life LAPD officer William Norcross, who moved to Los Angeles in 2015 and joined the department in his mid-40s. The series stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a man in his forties, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Other cast members include Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Melissa O'Neil, Afton Williamson, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore, and Eric Winter.

Main characters[edit]

John Nolan[edit]

Jonathan "John" Nolan (portrayed by Nathan Fillion) is the main character of the series. He was a Police Officer I from Seasons 1-3 and a Police Officer II in Season 4. In Season 5, he was promoted to Police Officer III via a "golden ticket" (allowing an officer to choose any position in the LAPD) in Season 5. He works at the Los Angeles Police Department, and is assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division.

His training officer in Season 1 was newly-promoted LAPD Officer Talia Bishop. However, after her move to the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Nolan's training officer until the first episode of Season 4 was former undercover Detective Nyla Harper. In Season 5, Nolan becomes a training officer, helping to finish Aaron Thorsen's training after Harper goes on maternity leave. In "Dye Hard", he begins training rookie Celina Juarez.

The oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), he is assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. He was studying at Pennsylvania State University but dropped out and went into the construction business upon learning that Sarah, his girlfriend and later wife, was pregnant. At the age of 45, Nolan closed his construction company in Pennsylvania and after taking down a robbery suspect at a bank in his hometown of Foxburg, Pennsylvania, moved out west to become a police officer. He is divorced with a son, Henry. Nolan becomes a training officer in the later seasons to teach the next generation of cops and help make positive change in the LAPD.

Nolan's badge number is 25253, which he states in the episodes "Green Light", "Consequences", "Fire Fight", and "Under Siege".

Angela Lopez[edit]

Angela Lopez (portrayed by Alyssa Diaz) is a Police Detective since season three. In season 1 and 2, she was a Police Officer III assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division as the training officer for Jackson West. They usually worked the 7-Adam-07 beat. In Season 3, Lopez is promoted to Police Detective I. Lopez's badge number is 29842 in Seasons 1-2. Following her promotion to detective in Season 3, her badge number changed to 1777.

Wade Grey[edit]

Wade Grey (played by Richard T. Jones) is the Watch Commander at the Mid-Wilshire Division. He is a Police Sergeant II. Grey's badge number is 6325. Grey initially believes that Nolan may be changing career because of a possible midlife crisis and doubts that he is suitable for police work, but later sees his potential. Grey served in the United States Army prior to joining the LAPD. He has a daughter who is attending college in New York City.

Jackson West[edit]

Officer Jackson West (portrayed by Titus Makin) was a Police Officer I assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. His training officer was Angela Lopez during Seasons 1-2. His training officer in Season 3 was Doug Stanton during episodes 2-5. Quigley Smitty also routinely filled in as his training officer whenever Lopez was not available. In "Amber", West was promoted to Police Officer II. West and his training officers usually worked the 7-Adam-07 beat. West's badge number was 33356.

An eager, if somewhat naive, rookie and the son of Commander Percy West, head of the LAPD's Internal Affairs Division. Top of his class at the Police Academy, he was firmly committed to the LAPD and strived to be the best officer he can as he wanted to maintain his family's traditions. Jackson was killed in the Season 4 premiere in an effort to help identify the people who kidnapped him and Lopez.

Zoe Andersen[edit]

Captain Zoe Andersen (played by Mercedes Mason) was the Commanding Officer of the Mid-Wilshire Division. Andersen's badge number was 898. Captain Andersen used to be a Marine, serving with the military police. After leaving the Corps, she spent a year with the United States Pentagon Police Criminal Investigations Directorate before joining the LAPD. Because of her prior experience, Andersen has risen up the ranks very quickly, to the point where some of her officers see her more as a boss than a fellow officer. She is killed in the line of duty trying to protect Nolan from a vengeful gang leader.

Lucy Chen[edit]

Lucy Chen (played by Melissa O'Neil) is a Police Officer I assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. Her training officer was Tim Bradford until she was promoted to Police Officer II during the episode "Amber". She usually worked the 7-Adam-19 beat. Chen's badge number is 28537.

Talia Bishop[edit]

Talia Bishop (portrayed by Afton Williamson) is a Special Agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and a former LAPD officer. She had been promoted to a Police Officer III and assigned as a training officer in the Mid-Wilshire Division. Bishop was the training officer for John Nolan in Season 1. Bishop's badge number was 27459.

Tim Bradford[edit]

Timothy "Tim" Bradford (played by Eric Winter) is assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division where he worked as the training officer for Lucy Chen until Lucy was promoted in the episode "Amber". Bradford and Chen usually worked the 7-Adam-19 beat. Bradford's badge number during Seasons 1-3 was 34831, which he stated during a phone call in the episode "Casualties". When he is promoted to Sergeant I in Season 4, his job role is a Patrol Field Supervisor and his badge number is changed to 3483. In Season 5 Bradford joins the Metro Unit (an LAPD armed response unit).

A strict, no-nonsense training officer, Bradford used to be a Marine squad leader who served in Iraq and Afghanistan before joining the LAPD. Winter also stars as Tim's doppelganger 'Dim' in later seasons. He gives up patrol duties to have a relationship with Lucy and becomes a Metro officer.

Nyla Harper[edit]

Detective Nyla Harper (portrayed by Mekia Cox) is a Police Detective I who previously worked undercover for four years. After her undercover operation, she received a "Golden Ticket", which allows her to choose her assignment, and requested to be assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division as a training officer. She was John Nolan's training officer following the departure of Talia Bishop from seasons 2-3. She trained Aaron Thorsen in Season 4 before returning to a detective position in Season 5 as Nolan becomes the newest Field Training Officer for the Mid-Wilshire Division. Harper's badge number is 56464.

Wesley Evers[edit]

Wesley Evers (played by Shawn Ashmore) is is the husband of Angela Lopez. A recurring character in Seasons 1-2, he became a main character in Seasons 3-6. Wesley was a defense attorney in Seasons 1-4 and became an assistant district attorney in Season 5.

Bailey Nune[edit]

Lieutenant Bailey Nune (played by Jenna Dewan) is a Firefighter with the Los Angeles Fire Department. She holds the rank of 1st Lieutenant in Army Reserve. She was a recurring character in the third and fourth seasons until she was promoted to a main character beginning in "Heart Beat". She is also a main character in the fifth and sixth seasons.

Aaron Thorsen[edit]

Officer Aaron Thorsen (played by Tru Valentino) is a former internet celebrity who was involved in a murder case in which he was found not guilty. He is a recurring character in the fourth season and a main character in the fifth and sixth seasons. His badge number is 14483, and his training officer in Season 4 was Detective Nyla Harper. After Harper goes on maternity leave in Season 5, John Nolan helps to finish his training before he is promoted to Police Officer II in "Dye Hard". Thorsen and Harper's call sign was 7-Adam-19. He first appears in season four, episode two, "Five Minutes".

Celina Juarez[edit]

Officer Celina Juarez (played by Lisseth Chavez) is Nolan's enthusiastic new rookie. She causes trouble for Nolan as he believes she is too superstitious. She joined the Academy in order to solve her sister's murder and disappearance. Her badge number is 53362.
