The Battle of Rohlu took place in 1772, marking a significant chapter in the history of the Kangra region, particularly involving Sansar Chand and Raja Raj Singh of Chamba. The conflict emerged shortly after Sansar Chand gained formal possession of the Kangra fort and set his sights on expanding his dominion into the neighboring hilly principalities.

Background

The Kangra fort had been under the control of the Mughal Qiladars, and Sansar Chand, seeking to extend his influence, targeted the strategically important territory of Rohlu. The stage was set for a confrontation between Sansar Chand and Raja Raj Singh of Chamba.

The Battle

The Chamba chief, in alliance with the Raja of Nurpur, faced Sansar Chand's forces, which were bolstered by the support of the chief of Guler. The clash occurred in the Rohlu region, and it is reported that Sansar Chand launched a surprise attack that proved decisive. The battle unfolded with intensity, and during the course of the conflict, Raja Raj Singh of Chamba fell on the battlefield. His death dealt a severe blow to the Chamba-Nurpur alliance, leading to the rout of their forces.
