Avratyn Armed Uprising (1918) was an armed uprising of peasants from the village of Avratyn and surrounding villages in the Starokonstantinovsky Uyezd of the Volhynia Gouvernorate province against the rule of Pavlo Skoropadskiy.

The Uprising[edit]

The uprising began on 23 July, when the peasants defeated a punitive detachment that had arrived to collect the contributions. On 26 July, the command sent regular troops against the rebels, who brutally dealt with the peasants.

There is a document from the Provincial Starosta's Office of 29.07.1918 in Zhytomyr, which describes that on 26 July, an organised uprising of peasants from Avratyn and Bazaliya volosts took place in Starokonstantinovsky Uyezd. The head of the county state guard and the head of the district guard were killed, while part of the county guard was killed and part was dispersed. Villagers from five villages: Avratynka, Halchyntsi, Ozhyhivtsi, Yakhnivka and Svynna used rifles and machine guns to confront the authorities. Appropriate measures were taken to stop the uprising, and assistance was sought from the German and Austrian military authorities, as well as from neighbouring counties and Zhytomyr.[1]
