On June 26, 2008, Silva Harotonian, an Iranian citizen of Armenian descent,[1] was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and charged with "promoting a Velvet Revolution in Iran".[2]
She was released from prison on March 10, 2010.[3]
Arrest and imprisonment[edit]
On June 19, 2008, Harotonian, arrived in Iran from Armenia to work for a not-for-profit organization based out of Washington, D.C.,[4][5] which arranges educational exchanges in Iran.
On June 26, 2008, Harotonian was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on charge of "promoting a Velvet Revolution in Iran".[6][7] On June 29, 2008, she was forced to confess that she had cooperated with the CIA and The Pentagon to create insecurity in Iran.[8] She was housed in the Evin Prison with American journalist Roxana Saberi.[9][10]
On Jan, 19, 2009 was sentenced to three years in prison.[11][12] In response, Harotonian went on a hunger strike.[13][14]
She was released on March 10, 2010.[3]
Reactions[edit]
The U.S. State Department spokesman Robert Wood said. “We once again urge Iran’s leadership to grant the release of Harotonian.” [15][16]
The Federal government of the United States said: "Harotonian is an administrative assistant, not a political activist. Her conviction on charges of trying to overthrow the Iranian government are also baseless.”[17][18]
The Center for Human Rights in Iran (ICHRI) expressed concern about Harotonian dire situation in prison and demanded her release.[3][19]
On June 24, 2009, at press conferences in Paris and New York, Roxana Saberi called for the release of Harotonian.[20][21]
