Both USB and IEEE1394 operate atop a physical layer interface specification that is called out in the respective specifications. I saw a reference in Wikipedia but not in the respective USB and IEEE1394 articles. Its nice when Wikipedia has accurate information. I'll need to find the respective USB and IEEE1394 standards documents, I have a copy but they are not generally available for free.
