Case for merger

These two categories--"American crime fiction writers" and "American mystery writers"--define fields that are virtually synonymous in general parlance. There is already considerable overlap, with more than 50% of those listed as "American crime fiction writers" (29 out of 53) also listed as "American mystery writers." In almost every case beyond those currently overlapping, it is hard to see why a given writer qualifying for one list wouldn't qualify for the other. Merging the categories under either title would go far toward creating a comprehensive, nonconfusing list of American writers in the field. As for which title would be used for a merged category, while at present the "American mystery writers" list is much larger than the "American crime fiction writers" list, the primary article discussing the field is crime fiction, which is also the broader term.
