We need treaties by year[edit]

With almost 700 treaties in the last century we should establish a treaties by year hierarchy. __meco (talk) 20:16, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's do-able, but difficult, because the year a treaty was signed and the year it became effective are often different. We would need to decide which date to use if it were done. Good Ol’factory (talk) 06:46, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think we could research a bit how this is usually done. In texts you will often find the phrase "...the 1968 treaty..." referring to a specific treaty. Then checking to see if 1968 was the year when the treaty was ratified or when it went into effect, then doing the same over again a few times, then we should have an idea of what to count as the year of the treaty. __meco (talk) 13:59, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is no one accepted way to do this. Less academic sources, like media sources, often use the date of signing. More formal academic sources often use the date the treaty became legally binding, but there is no accepted practice either way. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:23, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
