The artist has created pictorial space by using different depths of relief; in the foreground Ghiberti has used a deep relief to describe the scene. Whereas in the background he has used a very shallow relief to describe the distant landscape. It is similar to aerial perspective, because the more deep the relief , the darker and deeper the shadows and the more shallow relief casts lighter and not as big shadows making it look further away.

The overlapping of the figures also creates the illusion of space in the relief. The figures in the foreground are all overlapping each other, like the figure in the centre foreground is overlapping the donkey making it seem as if one is in front of the other. Another example is the columns of the peristyle are overlapping the figures behind making it look as if they are behind the columns which create the illusion of space.

The artist has also used mathematical perspective to create the illusion of space in the relief, the orthogonals of the floor tiles and the entablature on the building on the left describe going back in space .The scale of the figures also describe the illusion of space, the figures in the background are much smaller and in a more shallow relief, whereas the figures in the foreground are larger and in a much deeper relief.

The relief describes a hectic scene; Ghiberti has created a sense of chaos and confusion by describing many figures in the deep foreground and the shallow background. The figures gesticulate dramatically and run through the columns of the peristyle. The figures in the foreground are in two groups on either side of the centre of the panel.

There are female figures as well as children, animals and male figures, some are carrying sacks on their heads and backs and on the left a little boy seems to be buying a sack from a man with a donkey. On the left in a niche is a group of figures on a platform. Behind the two groups of figures in the foreground is a peristyle of columns and in the far background is a mountain range with smaller figures in a shallow relief. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.226.54.26 (talk) 10:36, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
