English: Surnommée la "Capitale de l'An Mil" ou "la ville aux 1001 églises".
Ancienne Capitale de l'Arménie de 961 à 1045. Elle a rivalisé avec Constantinople et a compté jusqu'à 100 000 habitants. Mais en 1064, les Turcs Seldjouks venus de l'Est prennent la ville...suivis ensuite par les Géorgiens, les Kurdes...en 1236 par les Mongols. Elle a été abandonnée après 1319 à la suite d'un grave séisme et est devenue une ville fantôme. Elle est inscrite au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO. Surplombant la gorge, l'Eglise de St Grégoire Tigran Honents a été construite en 1215 par un riche marchand. L'église possède des fresques faites par des Géorgiens.
