Description
English: Nadir Shah Afshar var en turkmensk leder, som gik i safavidisk tjeneste, da dynastiet kun var en skygge af sig selv. Landet var plaget af angreb udefra, og det var Nadir Shahs fortjeneste, at Iran oplevede en opblomstring. 1736 blev han hyldet som shah og generobrede Kandahar. Herfra drog han mod syd og erobrede i 1739 Delhi. Her måtte stormogulen Muhammad Shah betale enorme summer i tribut, aflevere påfugletronen og diamanten koh-i-noor samt afstå alt land nord for Indus-floden. Nadir Shah er afbildet med en karakteristisk hat, men ellers som stormogulerne med glorie og på en indisk trone og tæppe. Om maleriet er udført før eller lige efter, at han blev myrdet i 1747, vides ikke.

Nadir Shah Afshar was a Turkmen leader who entered Safavid service when the dynasty was but a shadow of its former self. The country was plagued by attacks from outside, and it was to Nadir Shah's merit that Iran experienced a flourishing.
