The shoes were controversial in that the prosecution contended more wear should should have been apparent. Ryan himself earlier said he could make the 20 mile trek "without scuffing his commissary shoes." Another witness, C. E. Cross stated the footwear looked polished and cleaned up from when he first saw them. " |
