Het kloostercomplex met de kerk van de Moeder Gods werd gebouwd in de 16de eeuw. Het klooster Khor Virab ("Խոր Վիրապ" in het Armeens, ofwel diepe put) is een van de populairste bezienswaardigheden in Armenië. Het is het dichtstbijzijnde punt (binnen Armeense grenzen) bij de berg Ararat en biedt een spectaculair uitzicht over dit Armeense symbool. De plaats is tevens bekend vanwege de gevangenhouding van St. Gregorius de Verlichter (oftewel Grigor Lusavorich in het Armeens), dertien jaar lang, door Koning Tiridates III.
