Summary

Description
English: Barre Civil War Monument - Barre, Massachusetts, USA. Installed 1866. Sculptor unknown. Smithsonian Control Number: IAS 77000015. Inscription: (On south side of monument:) "JOY FOR THE RETURNED; TEARS FOR THOSE THAT COME NOT AGAIN" (On lower south side of monument:) GETTYSBURG (On west side of monument:) "GUARD IT SACREDLY"/ANTIETAM (On north side of monument:) "THE UNION LIVES"/FORT HUDSON (On east side of monument:) "BEHOLD THE SACRIFICE"/NEWBERN (On south side of base:) ERECTED BY THE TOWN/1866 unsigned. This monument was originally erected in Haverhill, Massachusetts as a monument to Hannah Duston. (When her home was attacked by Native Americans, Hanna Duston and a friend were captured while Mr. Duston and their twelve children got away safely. Some weeks later Hannah and her friend were able to escape by killing ten of their captors.) In 1855 the Duston Monument Association was formed to solicit funds to erect a monument on the site of the Duston home; however, a dispute as to whether the site acquired was actually where the Duston home stood led contributors to withdraw their support. When litigation followed, the monument was sold to a Woburn man. Later the monument's inscription to Duston was removed and the monument was eventually sold to the Town of Barre for $6,000 in Oct. 1865. For additional information the Barre Gazette, Nov. 17, 1866 and the files of the Barre Historical Society. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire dated Oct. 13, 1972. This artwork is in the public domain because the artist(s) died more than 70 years ago.
