The Batman – Part II is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. Produced by DC Studios, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be the sequel to The Batman (2022) and the second film in a planned Batman shared universe. The film will be directed by Matt Reeves, from a screenplay he is co-writing with Mattson Tomlin, and will star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell.

Warner Bros. planned for The Batman to be the first in a new trilogy of Batman films and to form a shared universe during development, with ideas discussed ahead of the first film's release. A sequel to The Batman was officially announced in April 2022, with Reeves and Pattinson returning, while Tomlin joined in August shortly before writing was set to begin. The title was announced in January 2023, before production was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. Filming is expected to begin in April 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in the United Kingdom.

The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 2, 2026. A third film is in development for the intended trilogy.

Cast[edit]

Additionally, Barry Keoghan is expected to reprise his role as the Joker, an enemy of Batman who is incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital.[5]

Production[edit]

Background[edit]

Warner Bros. intended for the DC Comics-based film The Batman (2022) to be the first in a new trilogy of Batman films by May 2019,[6] with key cast members reportedly signed on for future films by that November.[7] Warner Bros.' parent company WarnerMedia was confirmed in September 2021 to be planning for The Batman to establish a Batman-focused shared universe separate from their other DC Comics franchise, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).[8][9] Director Matt Reeves had suggested to studio executives that a sequel film could explore the character the Penguin further, but they wanted to use the idea for a spin-off series The Penguin (2024) instead.[10] In December, star Robert Pattinson said he had ideas for developing Bruce Wayne / Batman's character in further films, while producer Dylan Clark said The Batman would lay a foundation for future films to build upon.[11] Leading up to The Batman's release in March 2022, Pattinson and Reeves expressed interest in introducing Robin and featuring the Court of Owls, Calendar Man, Mr. Freeze, or Hush as villains in a sequel.[12]

Development[edit]

A sequel to The Batman was officially announced by Warner Bros. Pictures at its CinemaCon panel in April 2022.[1][13] Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich said "the entire team" would return from the first film,[13] including Pattinson to star as Batman and Reeves as the writer and director.[1][13] Reeves' return was not guaranteed and negotiations lasted longer than expected, in part due to WarnerMedia merging with Discovery, Inc. that month to become Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).[14] In August, Reeves signed an overall first-look film deal between his production company 6th & Idaho and Warner Bros., and renewed his deal with Warner Bros. Television Studios, where he was developing The Penguin and a series set in Arkham Asylum for the streaming service HBO Max.[15][16] Reeves' film deal was considered a reassurance in WBD committing to returning filmmakers, which came after that company had shelved the nearly-complete DCEU film Batgirl.[15][16] At that time, Clark was set to produce the sequel to The Batman through his company Dylan Clark Productions,[15] while Mattson Tomlin, an uncredited writer on the first film, was set to co-write the script with Reeves.[14][15] The writing process was expected to begin in the following weeks.[14]

After James Gunn and Peter Safran became the co-CEOs of DC Studios in November,[17] future projects for Reeves' The Batman shared universe were set to be overseen by that studio. Gunn had contacted Reeves about his projects by then,[18] when The Batman's sequel was not expected to release until as early as 2025 because Reeves was still working on the script.[19] Gunn debunked reports the next month that he and Safran were exploring potentially incorporating Reeves' The Batman content with Pattinson in their DC shared universe plans,[20] later explaining that they respected Reeves' decision to keep his shared universe separate from their new franchise the DC Universe (DCU).[21] Reeves met with Gunn and Safran in January 2023 to discuss how they could avoid their plans clashing,[22] when he confirmed Tomlin was co-writing the script,[23] and that The Penguin would establish a "little fabric" of plans that would lead into the sequel to The Batman;[24] Sarah Aubrey, the head of originals for HBO Max, said The Penguin would occur shortly before the events of the sequel.[25] At the end of the month, the film was titled The Batman – Part II and was given a release date of October 3, 2025. Gunn said that the film, along with other projects that did not fit into the DCU, would be labeled as "DC Elseworlds" moving forward. This is the same as how DC Comics uses the Elseworlds imprint to mark comic books that are separate from the main continuity.[26] By then, filming was scheduled to begin in November 2023, at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in the United Kingdom.[27][28] Reeves confirmed Andy Serkis would reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth,[4] while Barry Keoghan was reported to be reprising his role as the Joker,[5] and Colin Farrell expressed interest in returning as the Penguin.[29] By the end of March, the character Clayface was expected to be part of the film.[30]

Filming was delayed by June 2023 due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike that began the prior month, and was reportedly planned to start in March 2024. This was not expected to impact the film's release date.[31] Reeves had discussed the film with The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser by then, and was deliberating with Tomlin about how they could push the sequel farther from the first film.[32] Josh Hartnett and Joel Edgerton were reportedly being eyed for the role of Harvey Dent, with potential for the character to become his comic book alter-ego Two-Face by the end of the film.[33] When the WGA strike ended in September 2023, Warner Bros. was expected to resume pre-production work imminently.[34] Gunn heard a pitch for the film by December, although the script was not yet ready.[21] By January 2024, filming was expected to begin between August and October 2024.[2][35] Shortly after, Jeffrey Wright revealed he was reprising his role as James Gordon, and expressed interest in the character moving up from a lieutenant in the ranks of the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD).[3][36] Farrell and Paul Dano were reportedly returning by then, with Dano reprising his role as the Riddler.[2] In March, the film's release was delayed to October 2, 2026, due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes,[37][35] which had prevented further work on the script and reportedly caused several major stages that the film would use for production to already be reserved through the end of 2024. Filming was then expected to begin in April 2025, with the release date chosen to allow Reeves more time to work on the film.[38][35]

Filming[edit]

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in April 2025,[38] at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in the United Kingdom.[27] Filming was originally scheduled to begin on November 23, 2023,[28] before it was expected to begin in March 2024,[31] and then expected to start between August and October 2024.[2][35]

Release[edit]

The Batman – Part II is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on October 2, 2026.[37] It was previously scheduled to release on October 3, 2025.[26]
